I know a standing starting position is OK for masters, but how about a 3-point start?

Thanks

I have been using a 3-point start in my hurdle races for the past few years. I have had no issues from meet officials at the local, national, and world levels.

WMA Rules of Competition

1.8.(8) Master competitors are not required to use starting blocks or a crouch start or have both hands in contact with the track for the start of any race.

I can confirm. I've used 3 point starts in 2 of the last 4 nationals without any problems, plus in Colorado.

I haven't tried this yet because I had the same concern. Thanks for the information though, I will try this one out.

In our masters championships which took place aug 09 we were informed by the starter that all athletes have to use blocks ????

trackrunner,

I copied the below from the USATF 2009 rule book. Sometime officials get confused.

Rule 161 2.
Starting blocks shall be used for all races up to and including 400 meters and the lead-off leg of relays where that leg does not exceed 400 meters. They shall not be used for any other race.
NOTE 1: For Youth Athletics exception, see Rule 302.2(e).
NOTE 2: For Masters exception, see Rule 332.2(d).

Rule 332 2.(d)
The general rule regarding the use of starting blocks and stance is waived.
The use of blocks and stance is within the discretion of the competitor.

3-point is allowed. Be careful to stand still...

trackrunner,
I just noticed that you are located in Ireland. The WMA and USATF don't require the use of starting blocks, but your governing body might require them. Check your local Rules of Competition.
