So, on sacsports.com, I see this rule:

Spikes:
Spikes are limited to 7mm (1/4") in length which are pyramid, Christmas tree or compressions spikes. Spikes will be checked at venues and call room/clerking tent. No pin spikes are allowed on any of the surfaces. Spikes must conform to USATF rule 143.3 b and c.

Does pin mean needle spikes? Why can't we use needle spikes? Hayward and college meets don't restrict needle spikes. I understand the need to preserve the track but I don't know why they're being so strict about this. Thoughts?
