Post subject:  Old men run too

Way back when (and in this setting, I suspect everyone here has some knowledged of that time period), as in the late 50's and early 60's, I was a pretty good high school sprinter. Life interfered for many years but now I've rediscovered the joys of running. But I'm going at it maybe in the wrong way. I was always a short distance sprinter, now I run 5 and 10k races cause that's all I ever hear about. I think I would like to run short again (not sure cause I don't want to injure myself). Are there places where old fools like me get together and compete against each other? Are there resources to help an old man gain awareness of his limitations and how to train for sprints? Curiosity killed the cat but motivates me.
