Post subject:  Short Approach vs Longer Approach?

Yesterday I threw in my first winter meet using my new longer 11 step approach ( verses 7 step ) and threw 70.55m. It felt absolutely brilliant.

Then after the competition I did a few golf ball throws off of a shorter approach and it felt even better:

After looking at both these video clips I am torn -should I stay with the longer approach or use the shorter accelerating approach?

Thoughts?

You are experienced enough to answer that question, don't you think so?
It is not about the length of the approach but about the running speed AND how you can handle that. When the speed is higher but you (I mean: someone) cannot transfer the running speed into the release speed of the spear, a shorter approach maybe is better. When I watch your video's I am often embarrassed about how slow you do run for such mighty throws. So the effectiveness of your throw off will be fabulous.
But it could be that there exists a longer approach with more speed that leads to ultra-mighty throws?
I personally still cannot handle the speed of the run up. Well, I started learning the javelin throw only at age 55. My best throw (35.45 with 400g at age 60) was with a rather fast run up but very much deceleration at the end. So I certainly could have done the same with a five step or so. Nevertheless I do keep the run up longer because some day... And then the real distances come.

I believe off my longer approach I should go between 75 to
80 m next year . After seeing the shorter approach and seemly
faster - at the end - I think I could crack 80m - especially if you compare
that throw with the speed of my approach when
I threw 74.73m 6 months ago!

yikes....really.....sorry......
The bottom line is how much more speed I can get off my approach without losing anything at the end - during the throw - I am lighter then last year and my legs are much stronger. I will have to take a gamble on running a little faster. I already have 74m in the bag if i want more 77m to 80m I will have to be moving faster and hitting the same or even positions.
After reviewing the two run ups I think I will stick with the longer one as I believe it has more potential
