Not really a masters questions, but in regard to flying to National Senior Games. I don't want to check my spikes, prefer to have them in carryon. Is there a problem taking the shoes with the spikes already in them through the screening? I can't find any info about it on the TSA website.

I was told to take the spikes out of the shoes and put them in a separate bag. Is this what people generally do?

Can anyone who travels frequently to meets tell me how they handle it?

thanks!

I usually have my spikes in a carry on bag and have never had a problem! I have a spare pair in my luggage but try to have something to run in just in case as my luggage has been lost or delayed several times including the WMA in San Sebastian whwre the airline gave me a voucher to buy new shoes etc.

Never had an issue with it. I got more problems from having my long jump tape then with my spikes. They ask to see the tape not the shoes. lol.

I never received any lip about my track spikes in my carry-on either. Just to be safe, I usually untighten the spikes and bring a spike key with me. Then I could easily separate the spikes from the shoes. That keeps everybody happy. Too bad I have to hand over my deadly lotion and drinking water. lol

good question, recently when I traveled with a carry on bag, I opted for the safe route and just brought flats, I would wonder if the some of the bigger airports that it would pose a problem if attempting to board with spikes

Spikes on shoes and baton through Boston to Philadelphia and return in late April. No problems.

I called the TSA directly about this just to be on the safe side for Nationals. They advised me to take the spikes out of the shoes so I put my shoes in the carry on and checked the actual spikes. Who knows if I would have been stopped, but I did it to avoid any potential problems at those horrificly long lines at security these days. They also told me I couldn't carry on a baton, but they were ok with my measuring tape!
