Looking for good strategies to deal with this-I usually have great warmup throws at meets but then tense up or try too hard for the throws that count-any suggestions?

Couple of things. First, don't try and bomb your warm-ups.
You only need two or three warm-ups, otherwise your still practicing.

Don't try and throw hard in warm-ups. Try to throw an 80% throw.

Also, slow down in the back of the ring. We all get excited and come out of the back to fast. The discus is the one event I'm most guilty of charging out of the back and over rotating my throw.

I'll try and tone down the warmups-but that's the vexing thing-when I am just warming up and not trying to throw hard it goes-then when I am competing I try harder, tighten up and it doesn't fly that well.
Starting too fast has always been an issue for me-I actually look forward to wet or slick circles because that forces me to start slow and balanced.

I agree with rev gj and take the same approach.

I usually try to use my first throw as a starting point to just get a mark...this takes some pressure off rather than fouling. It is probably a 90% throw that is smooth (I'm a glider).

2nd throw is all-out and usually one of my better, although I also seem to do well on my 5th throw.

I like it when I have someone "pushing me" in the competition and will focus on competing with them....I had a 14" improvement for a PR last meet using this method.

Lastly, the meet is not the time to overthink but to DO!!!!!

All this is probably like the throws themselves.....easy to say but tough to execute.
