Lahti looks like a small place. Does anyone know if the town can accommodate 6000 to 10000 athletes and their families?

I guess early reservations are a must.

Lahti may be small (about 100,000 population), but it has hosted major events before:

It looks like a nice place. I enjoy competing in European tourist cities.

The economic benefits for the host site must be incredible. At Riccioni, 9000 athletes entered and most of them brought along at least one other person. The average person probably stayed for 5 to 7 days. Masters spent money on lodging, food, local transportation, clothing, alcohol, souvenirs, and lap dances (okay; maybe not lap dances). The $150,000 WMA fee is cheap when you consider the benefits to the local economy. If I connections with the WMA good-old boys, I'd want some of the action, too.

That said, I have no problem with people making a profit on the competition— as long as they put on a good meet and give something back to the WMA and the athletes.
