I'm wondering what way people recommend holding the baton at the start of the race, when coming out of the starting blocks. I tried it today using a couple different styles, and nothing seemed to feel right. It's been over 20 years for me, since I last came out of the blocks with a baton, so I'm sure that's part of the problem. I'm running a relay at an alumni meet on Saturday, and am looking for some last minute advice. Thanks!

Here is a link to a section from a youth coaching book

I teach my kids a similar hold to the one shown in the above picture, except only wrap the index finger completely around the baton. Use the thumb, middle, ring and pinky fingers for support on the ground. You can also "cheat" by placing some of the support weight on the back of the baton by letting it rest on the track. Good luck - I usually put my second fastest runner coming out of the hole, so you obviously have some giddy-up!!

You hold the baton on your right hand (Assuming you're right handed) and wrap your indexe finder around it, the rest of your fingers are right on the starting line...then when you get up and running, you can grab it with your fist.
