On 11-22 I had my aortic valve replaced in my heart. I have a mild thickening of my left ventricule. Otherwise I am healthy. My arteries are clean. The surgery was a mini-sternotomy. There is only a 3 inch incision in my sternum. I am told that I can become more physically competent in a few months than I have been in the last several years. My cardiologist states that my sternum will be healed 12 weeks after my surgery (02-07-14). I am 74 and compete in the throws. (I threw at Rutgers 57-61 using the name Brian Young.) My best events are the hammer, weight, and weight pentahalon. I have been competing in MTF since the early 90s. Weight lifting has always been a part of my training. I turn 75 on 8-06 and would like to post some respectable marks in the 75-79 age group before the end of 2014. I want to train effectively over the next eight months without injurying myself. I would like advice from anyone who has direct or indirect experience with this type of recovery process.

Rasal,

I do not have experience with this type of injury but I do want to say good luck to you!

I had mitral valve repair done robotically July 7 of 2013 and was back running mid Sept. I am 65. This type of surgery is less invasive, I only have a 4 inch scar under my right arm. Doctors basically said do whatever you want, the only caution was lifting heavy weights as this puts pressure on the entire vascular system.
The on real frustration is that you get out of shape a whole lot faster than you get back in. Take is slow and you should be fine. good luck.
