Ruth Wysocki ran her first race in 6 years ,a local (Temecula Ca) run for the Cure 5K and won in 18:18 ---Ruth is 49 and according to USA site that is just 3 sec slower than JBS's pending 49 yo record. I have no conformation of the course or time I'll e-mail her this this PM.

Okay, now that I survived it I can confess to my first race in over 6 years. I ran our local Race for the Cure this morning. It's obviously not a highly competitive race, since I won the women's division. I managed 18:18 for 5K and even won $250!

Wow! Thanks for the great news! Go Ruth!

Official results should be here eventually:

I'm a bit embarrassed that my little run yesterday is creating so much attention. I haven't raced since about 1999, and I'm not quite sure why I even jumped in. I had been training with my son during the HS off season and thought about getting in a 5K to see what kind of shape I had gotten into. Then school started and really disrupted the good training I was doing. So, even though it went pretty good, I know I was in better shape 6-8 weeks ago. Then, I chickened out on putting on racing shoes and ran in my training shoes (Nike Frees) which are pretty light. Anyway, it was just a local Race for the Cure, and I was pretty happy to be able to go sub-6:00/mile. The competitive side in me says to train a bit more and try again. The other crazy thought is that I turn 50 on March 8 and I'm tempted to as my son's HS coach if I can run a mile with the kids just to see what I can do.

I just read your post about your recent 5K and wanted to congratulate you on "getting back out there." I truly hope we'll be lucky enough to see much more from you as a super fast 50 year old!
