I hope you are doing well.

I did 90 meter strides in the grass today. It's been pretty close 6 months, but my recovery in the last three weeks somehow feels significantly accelerated. :mrgreen:

Hello everyone,

I am officially nine months post-op today. My rehab has gone well and my training is progressing. I am doing many things now that I could not before my injury.
I am so looking forward to actually running.

Fidel, I hope things are going just as well for you. If you make it out to the Hayward Classic in two weeks maybe we can compare scars. :D

Hello everyone,

I competed in the Hayward Classic yesterday and though I ran two technically sloppy races, I am satisfied with my efforts. These races are my first steps at putting last year's horrific injury behind me.

The Hayward Classic was fun, I had the chance to meet some great people:

[*]Mark Berry: the phases of your 100M are smooth!
[*]Peter Diamond and Eddie Odoms: I wish there was some way to train with you.
[*]Michael Waller: only you can run the 400M Hurdles for fun and "...LOVE IT!"

The RunnerSpace.com coverage is amazing. The HD video provides an opportunity to actually view and critically analyze most races. The first third of my 100 felt choppy and robotic; and I failed to run the curve in the 200. Because I can see these things, I can thoughtfully tailor my training to address these issues.

Fidel, are you jogging yet? Hopefully, next year we can share stories and compare scars.

I guess I should visit the forums a bit more...:-).

Recap and update on my achilles rehab:

-Surgey 12/3/10
-Cast off by New Years and started PT
-Walked 2 miles at 2 months. 2/3.
-Able to jog just shy of 4 months. 3/29.
-Strides and hill repeats at 4 months
-37 sec 200m at 5 months. Ran w/same spikes I tore achilles
-35 sec 200m at 5.5 months

WOW! 100M strides after 23 weeks, that is amazing.

Fidel you look great. You are obviously working very hard to get back.

Thanks for posting the videos, though the photo made me a bit light-headed.

What sort of sensations are you feeling on the repaired side?

Has the incision flattened out completely?

The sensations I feel on the repaired side are: Stiffness in the morning and that's about it. I don't feel pain and the scar looks pretty smooth. I've heard horror stories from others where the scar is crooked, adhesions on the underside and infection. I feel lucky I don't have any of this.

My biggest challenge now is getting back the strength and flexibility. I still can't rise on my toes but it could be a mental thing...maybe. I also can't run one mile bcuz the calf and lower leg is so out of shape. I bet I could do it if I really tried and powered through any cramping. I'll just keep doing 100/200/400's with lots of recovery until I get there. Maybe take up P90x...:-).

Update since yesterday's post: I ran 1.5 miles! No cramping or achilles issues. But, I was sucking big time air...so out of shape!

Fidel's weekly rehab update: 5x400's today. 91, 88, 85, 96, 81. I won't mention the recovery...:). Tendon still attached! I had thoughts of doing block starts but the ankle doesn't bend that way yet.

It will be 6 months after the achilles rupture next week. I'm trying to decide what race or activity I should do. It would be awesome if I could do block starts.

I got antsy and did a few block starts. I probably shouldn't have been doing them because that first step does stress the achilles beyond what I'm used to so far. I also felt the good achilles strain a bit so I stopped at 3. Here's a video of the smoother start of the 3... :wink:

Fidel, you look great, but block starts? Patience, my friend.

I am officially 10 mos. tomorrow and I've practiced block starts once (and it shows!). Tomorrow will be my second session.

I ran a 100M today at the Pacific Association USATF Championships: 12.04 into a slight headwind. Ho-hum...

Like you, I want to run fast, but I am learning it takes hard work and much patience.
You and I would be wise to remain focused on our progression.

Yes! You are 100% correct. I have to have patience. Can you believe I'm more concerned about the good achilles? It's a given I will favor the bad one but the good one isn't in shape for high intensity yet. I realized this when doing those block starts. That first step with either leg is scary. It would suck if I popped the good one... :shock:

Thanks and great job on the 12.04! You'll be mid 11's in no time.

So, I see you're back in Sacramento. 11.82 semi-final and 24.58 200 just shy of one year post-rupture. Great job!

Well, it seems I've hit a plateau after what seemed rapid improvement from months 3-6. I can't run as far or as fast as I want. My lower legs don't have any endurance and I have to take 2-3 days off after workouts. But, I keep working on it.

I ran a mile in mid-June as my first race back. It was a slow 7:02. I hope to at least run in one track meet this year...probably an all-comers meet in late July...maybe.

One positive this week is that I'm able to do one-legged hops on the bad leg but I'm mainly pushing off my mid-foot instead of my toes.
