Hello everyone,

I completely ruptured my achilles in the M40 100M final today. I am trying to stay away from shoulda-woulda-coulda at the moment to focus on beginning the recovery and the long way back. I spoke with an Orthopedic surgeon this afternoon from UC Davis. I am hoping that some of you can give input on things to consider regarding surgery vs. natural healing and the recovery in general. I am leaning towards surgery. I do intend to compete again at some point. My understanding is that could be a year+++.

BTW, anyone have a quality video of the M40 100 Final? I want to see how pitiful I looked.

Thanks in advance.

there is a video of your race on facebook. you go out of the picture just as your injury occurs. Many masters tracksters on facebook so I would join it if you havent already. Kimiko N. has posted most of the sprints and the videos are excellent

Thanks again leigh and kimiko,

I saw the video. I obviously had no business on the track as it's pretty clear I walked out of the blocks favoring my tender achilles. I shoulda-woulda-coulda stuck with my original plan to run the prelim and scratch the final if I was fortunate enough to make it. It's so frustrating  because I know better...simply one of the worst decisions I've made...

So here I am, surgery Friday. Assuming all goes well, I'll be donning the spikes in 2012.

Stay well everyone.

Hope you heal well and quickly. Hope you get back out there to compete as well.

Tried to find the videos...unable. How'd you find them?

BMo,

I followed leigh's instructions. There is a USA Masters Track group on Facebook. If you haven't already, join and find kimiko n. She's hella cool and has many if not all the Sac National sprint vids.

I appreciate the well-wishes.

Enjoy your day.

It took me forever to find too. The group is: "USA Masters Track".

Let me know if this helps.

Enjoy your day.

I had my splint and sutures removed yesterday. Everything is super stiff. Flexing the foot...even slightly...is hard, very deliberate work.

It's been 17 days of immobilization since injury. I find it astounding that half of my calf is missing! Atrophy is nuts.

I begin PT very soon.

Had my PT eval yesterday. No pain. As expected, the range of movement in my repaired ankle has decreased...most notably during eversion. Active Range of Movement (AROM) dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, inversion and eversion are becoming almost second nature again.

I've been assigned several drills to combat atrophy. I've been doing side-lying hip abductions and straight leg raises since the injury so when asked to do them yesterday, they were frightfully easy. So much so that my therapist threatened to add significant weight at the next session.

Does anyone have an idea of how many weeks of supervised PT I should expect? My rehab plan is slated for between 20 and 28 weeks. As most of the activities are done on my own, I am curious whether they will...at some point...give me a collection of excercises to do and schedule periodic follow-up appointments.

Enjoy your afternoon.

Sounds like things are going pretty well. Ask PT if you can graduate to home exercises after a while. Good luck, heal quickly.

I ruptured my left achilles during Thanksgiving weekend and had surgery on 12/3. I just want to say Walter (Buzooti) has been really helpful in providing info as to what to expect during the healing and rehab process. Lots of encouragement as well. Thanks!

I am currently in that stage where I can't do anything. I'm in a cast for another 3 weeks then PT starts. My wife asked me to give her a 2011 weekend date where I don't have a track meet scheduled so we can go camping. After the injury happened, I told her the 2011 calendar is wide open. We can go camping whenever she wants...

I'm finding out this is a pretty common injury but we can come back to 100%. Donovan Bailey ran sub 10 after his '97 injury and David Beckham started practicing in August after his March rupture.

Ijole jefe! Lo siento! What a drag, man. Hurry up and heal. We gotta attempt another assault on the 4 x 400 record at the Hayward Classico.

Thanks! Went to get my cast adjusted today and doc decided to take it off instead. He gave me a boot but still have to use crutches. Next appt is in 6 weeks but PT can start now. Have to go do my plyometrics now... Kidding...I wish...

I should be able to jog by April.
