Found out today that I have a Baker's Cyst on the back of my knee. I will get an MRI in the morning to see if there is any other damage to the knee.
Has anyone had one of these? If so, what is the prognosis? Will I still be able to run?
Thanks for any feedback,
Tony

Hi TonyB,

I used to be a Baker but I never had this cyst; are you a baker? :P

Never heard of "Baker's cyst" so I went to the website of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and this is the page they show.

Prognosis looks good, I hope yours is too after the MRI. Please let us know how you fare.

Okay - the results are back from the MRI. I have wear on my cartilage due to running. The Doctor wants to inject hyaluronic acid into my knee and aspirate the baker's cyst. This is a series of 5 injections over a 5 week period. I turn 50 in a few months and I seem to be falling apart. Getting old really sucks.

Yes, but it beats the alternative...

Uncle Billy,

You do have a valid point there my friend.

The doctor aspirated my knee today and injected a steroid, as per instructions from the insurance company. I will start physical therapy next week. Doctor still wants to inject the hyaluronic acid into knee after several months.

Anyone taking glucosamine and chondroitin? What has been your experience? Good or bad for the joints?

Hi TonyB,

I'm taking Glucosamine/Chondroitin in the morning and then Glocosamine/MSN in the evening. I have not had any joint problems, so I'd have to say it has been good for them, in the absence of contrary evidence.

I have tried Glucosamine/Chondroitin once, and used it for three straight months. For me, I didn't notice any difference at all. I didn't work for me. That being said, everyone is different, I some people swear by it. I'd say try it and see if it works for you.

Thanks for the feedback.

JavierS-not - how long have you been taking the glucosamine/chondroitin combo?

Monsco - sorry it didn't work out for you. I have been researching the use of glucoasmine and chondroitin and there is no definitive proof that is is effective. I guess the only way to know for sure is to just try it and see.

Thanks,
Tony

"JavierS-not - how long have you been taking the glucosamine/chondroitin combo?"

It has been about 9 months. But, the one caveat is that all my running is on rubberized tracks or dirt trails; I never run on asphalt or concrete for more than 20 meters.

I take glucosamine/chondroitin on and off. Seems to help a bit.

One caution, it can cause stomach irritation if you're prone to such things.

Thanks for the info - I bought some Osteo-Biflex today to give a try. It contains gulcosamine/chondroitin/MSM and something called 5-Loxin. Will give it a try for a couple of months and see what happens.

Physical Therapy session today. Need to develop more strength in my quads. Started with back pedal on the elliptical, did some single leg deadlift, one-leg squats on box, squats on a BOSU ball, and wall sits with bands around my knees. My quads were killing me. I had trouble walking out of there. Awesome feeling.
