Christel Donley of Colorado, a world champion and national champ many times over in the hep, writes me that she is having total shoulder replacement arthroplasty. Her surgery is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. Sept. 30.

Christel writes: "It will be luckily on my left arm (if there is something as luck) since I am righthanded. We tried everything else over the last 3 months, did not help and the pain is getting the best of me. I "gutted" it out during Nationals, but that was it.

"Is there anybody out there who has had that procedure and can give some advice as to be patient with the recovery -- and the function afterwards? I was told about 6-12 months rehab. Of course, I do not have all that time, thinking of Lahti."

She says her husband, Jerry, a world-class masters vaulter, will be a great nurse.

Any tips for Christel?
