Post subject:  Feet and ankle pain after deadlifts

I routinely get feet and ankle discomfort after deadlifts the day before. I don't lift extraordinary amounts. I wear flat ASICS hyper throw shoes with my orthostic inserts (always) when I DL. I try to maintain form and not struggle with very heavy weight. The discomfort is odd-feels very sore and tender or bruised but it does pass. What am I doing wrong? Do the old legs/feet just suck at this lift and do I need to just abandon this one?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Try barefoot.

For the last couple of years, I lifted in 8-inch workboots.
Switched to flat shoes and that helped.

Push your heels through the ground when you dead.

Because you wear orthotics, I would think you need more support than lifting barefoot. If you use double overhand hand grips or lift stiff-legged, your weight is way too far forward on your feet. You should not be bending over during any part of the lift. To properly shift weight to your heels, I suggest you use alternating hand grips, don't face a mirror (which forces you to look down), look up, sit back during 1st half of lift using mostly legs and little back, bar close to your shins, and wear your orthotics in deadlift slippers or deadlift/wrestling shoes. To keep your foot stable and your weight back on your heels, I suggest that your shoes have very little if any cushioning on the heels.
