Gray Pride event in San Diego: Should masters let hair go silver?

Sabra Harvey isn’t afraid to run fast — or go gray.

My wife, Chris, took pictures at a Silver Sisters Strut on Saturday, and wrote a nice story for Times of San Diego. It raises the question: Since masters athletes already are bucking societal expectations, should they rebel against “Beauty Terror” as well? In other words, gals, do you let your hair go naturally gray, white or silver? If not, why not? Some men dye their hair, but the culture accepts male grayness. No so much with women. Or is it Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in your house? In any case, the Boomers continue to lead the way as disciples of freedom and self-expression.

My own love of grey hair goes back a good 50 years, since when I was a teenager. Whenever my Dad would notice that when pubescent me had taken notice of a member of the opposite sex, he’d ask, a bit lecherously, “Is SHE your type?” Conversely, when I observed that HIS eye had been caught by a grey-haired temptress, I’d parrot back his question: “Dad, is SHE your type?” To which he’d reply, “Son, when you get to MY age, they are ALL your type!”

Flash forward 40 years, specifically to a restaurant in Richmond, VA, circa 1997. I was gloaming on a silver-tressed patron at a nearby table. Amidst my lustful gandering, suddenly, it occurred to me (with no little horror): I had become my Father!

Anyway, let’s raise our glasses to lasses with the frothy cream of ocean waves, frothing gloriously down their backside beaches. Ain’t…she…sweet?

Lipstick, clothing, make up, color of the hair, haircut – all personal esthetic choices. However you do look older with gray hair…up to you…

Silver foxes. Looking good ladies, and I bet you feel as good as you look. Love the group photo. For a natural, glowing, beautiful look, just run. Natural is the best.

Such hair as I have now is whatever color nature gives me, I may wish I had more hair, but I do not. To use that very much overused phrase “it is what it is”.

To Milan Jamrich: Absolutely not! One does not look older with gray hair. You look your age no matter what your hair color is. I see women desperately trying to hold onto their youth by bleaching or dying their hair and wearing too much make up and frankly, I think it makes them look older. Gray hair is beautiful and mature women are beautiful! It’s time we open our minds to the freedom of maturing and the beauty of letting go of the bondage of youth.
