Indoor-Outdoor meet in Santa Ana returns Sunday with 30m dash

Meet is thought to be at least 30 years old.

West Coast athletes interested in a tuneup for Landover indoor nationals are invited again to my friend Andy Hecker’s annual “Southern California Indoor Meet … Outdoors.” Andy writes: “I encourage same-day registration as I have for the last 30+ years … and keep demonstrating it can be done….Despite the $5 penalty for EARLY registration, I have had more pre-entries this year than ever before. Even from people who have run here before.” But no javelin or hammer, since the venue — Mater Dei High School — doesn’t allow it on the artificial turf. “Five people have inquired about the racewalk alone, maybe we’ll have a good race. Its the first event at 9:45 a.m. Two odder races have already been requested — 50m and 30m. If I have 2 competitors standing there when we are ready for the race, for any race, we’ll do it. If you want to fly in for a chance to run a 30, be there by 3 p.m. These will follow the 100 meters, which follows the relay events. … Weather reports predict a high of 70 and coastal winds (which might help the sprints or horizontal jumps).”

Andy adds:

For folks freezing around the country in February, that’s why we don’t have any indoor tracks in Southern California. As the climate changes, we don’t even have any rain. Just huge fires in December.

I’m still looking for a way to honor Ed Karpinski, the friendly guy who has taken your registrations the last several years, who died in April. He was a real character.

They have the Wanamaker Mile in New York, maybe we should have the Karpinski Mile here. Other ideas welcome. By the way, I will be involved in a 50K track record attempt in April, contact me in case anybody is interested in running 125 laps around the track in under 3 hours.”

Tried to figure out, when the meet is….
Sunday is our Mid America Masters Indoor meet, here in the cold and snow ( that is outside),…. smile!
it will be difficult to make it to two meets…
but the 30 m is tempting.

Also, we have a date AND location!! for the Pasadena Senior Games, June 2nd at CSLA, javelin the next morning at OXY!! We could not hold the jav at the same venue!!
    More info to come.
    NO complains, please.
We were desperately looking for a convenient site! It became a nightmare, but we woke up, AND things will work out!
    Hoping for everybody’s attendance!

Can’t find a “funny face” symbol!

Is CSLA actually CSULA? As in LA State ( from the old days)? I know where OXY is (My wife and daughter are both grads) Why not hold the whole event there?

    Andy’s Indoor and outdoor meet
in February is probably not 30 years itself

Andy has put on SCA, West Region and other meets for over 30 years.

    Trying again to explain:

CSLA is Cal State LA. don’t know what is was :in the “old days” did not live here.

James. Oxy was not available for the date we needed to choose, June 2nd! That’s the date that the Pasadena Senior Center needed.
Booking for Oxy ended June 1, after that: construction!!
I was lucky enough to get the upper field for the javelin.

Needless to say, as already stated, this year was a nightmare to find a decent venue for the date we needed.

Just for the record, I coached at Oxy for 20 yrs,. My kids all went there – THE great place to be.

Hope to see you at both places!

    Hi Christel,

Appreciate all your hard work finding a site, sometimes a REAL challenge. Can you tell me if the “upper field” you secured at Oxy is grass only? Or, has a tartan runway approach?

    Thank you,
    Logan Culp

Christel- could not agree more…Oxy is the place! I was an Eagle Rock High grad, so Oxy was an accident mortality part of my growing up
