Joy won at Mt. SAC in April.
Two months after
zapping Phil Raschker’s W55 American record in the 100,
Joy Upshaw did a number on Phil’s ARs in the 200 and 80 hurdles. At the new Sierra Gold Masters Track and Field Festival in Grass Valley (Northern California), Joy clocked 27.54 Saturday to lower the listed record of 27.78 by Fab Phil in 2002. (The listed WR is 26.36 by France’s
Nicole Alexis.) In the 80H, Joy ran 13.04 at Nevada Union High School, which smashed Phil’s listed record of 13.19 from 2002. (The WR is 12.31 by
Helgi Lamp of Estonia.)

Irene Obera running the 2 in 37.08. (She holds the WR at 36.80.) For now, Phil’s 4.90 (16-1) long jump American record is safe. Joy jumped a legal 4.65 (15-3) at Sierra Gold. Lemme know if you see any other records.

Joy was amazing!
It was great weather for sprinters. This inaugural meet was certainly a success.
Damien Leake continues to run phenomenal race after race. He won three here in great times at age 63. 100m in 12.13, 200m in 25.65, and the 50m in 6.83. A world record from him in the next decade or so wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
Honorable mention to the guy who jumped out of the stands (I assume) to be the third hurdler in Joy’s record attempt. He wasn’t bad, either.
Great performances Joy and Damian…Both of you must be training Smart and Hard ……like always!!! I love watching you both run….

I hope this meet does not start later next year. It was very hot in the late afternoon. I scratched the discus which was supposed to start at 8PM. At 7:00 an official said he had no idea when the discus would start. Were there lights on the field?
I would hope the meet managers would check with those in Southern California to see if there were any conflicts. When meet are on the same day both meets as well as the athletes suffer.
