Wind robs Kathy Bergen of W70 world record for 100 meters

Dang wind! If the breezes weren’t so stiff Sunday at the John Ward Masters Games, Kathy Bergen would have smashed the listed W70 world age-group record for 100 meters. According to results from the Santa Ana College meet south of Los Angeles, Kathy clocked 14.60 for 100, but with a 2.2 meters per second tailwind. That’s just over the legal limit of 2.0 mps for record consideration. The listed WR is 15.16 by New Zealand’s Margaret Peters in 2004. (The USA record is 15.57 by the legendary Irene Obera at Hawaii nationals in 2005.) Still, I’m betting this is the first time a women over 70 has run the 1 sub-15 in any conditions. Amazing!

Kathy also high-jumped 1.19 (3-10 3/4) — just short of the American record of 1.22 (4-0) by Leonore McDaniels.

In M80, Dick Richards of Encinitas, Calif., clocked 14.99 in the 100 (with a 2.4 mps wind). Payton Jordan’s WR is 14.35. Dick also long jumped 4.31 (14-1 3/4), but wind reading was NWI, which might not count for a world record. The listed M80 record is 4.19 (13-9) by Japan’s Mazumi Morita in 1995 and tied by American Mel Larsen in 2004.

Kathy is entered in Saturday’s masters 100 at the Mt. SAC Relays. If wind is legal, the WR is toast.

    Go Kathy!
A bunch of us Masters are competing in a few different events. There is also a 4x 800 WR attempt for the youngest group 35-39, the AR will fall for sure.

When Kathy Bergen breaks the world record in the 100 (either tomorrow or later in the year) she will become the third American woman on the list of masters world record holders in that event. The other two are Phil Raschker and Nadine O’Connor. Enough said.
