Mary Cain still not as fast as our best masters milers at Portland

Yeah, yeah. Mary Cain is the second coming of Mary Decker. No doubt Mary 2.0 will be a player at the world level, especially with Alberto Salazar as her coach. But on the same day (and track) that she added the 5K high school record to her portfolio, the masters mile winner cranked out a 4:22.52 — better than Mary’s 1500 best converted to a mile (4:24.19). Event organizer Dave Clingan reports from the Portland Track Festival: “Ian Gillespie (43) led most of the race, but was overtaken by Ahrlin Bauman (40) on the home stretch. Bauman ran 4:22.52, after running a 15:14.51 5000m the night before. Uli Steidl (41) finished third in 4:25.10, after running the 10000m the night before in 31:14.” Here’s the Flotrack video of the race.

Dave continues:

All nine finishers broke 4:40 on a day with ideal running conditions and a very appreciative crowd. The masters mile is part of the Portland Track Festival, which is now a high performance meet featuring elite open athletes competing in distances events from 800m to 10K.  Next year, we’ll be celebrating the 10th Annual Oregon Masters Mile (along with my 60th birthday!).

And here are results of the men’s mile and masters women’s 3K:

    Dave Clingan,

Thanks for putting together this race and having it as part of the Festival. You sure know how to pull together some fast old dudes for a race. I look forward to racing again next year and being a part of the 10 year anniversary of the Portland Masters Mile!

    Ron

  2. Peter Taylor - June 10, 2013

Congratulations to all, and thanks to Dave Clingan and Joanna Harper for their efforts.

Just a couple of notes to the information presented above:

    1. I believe that Kris Paaso and not Kim Passo holds the record for the 3000. Maybe there is a Kim Passo, but I haven’t heard of her.

    2. I think that Jim Sorensen and not Jim Sorenson holds the record for the 1 mile.

  3. KP and JS - June 12, 2013

Mr Taylor, you are correct…and Sorensen ran for Sports Basement…not unattached

  4. Peter Taylor - June 14, 2013

Kevin, you must think I am a really old dude (“Mr Taylor”).* In truth, I am, but I try not to tell too many people. Hope you do well at the big meet in Olathe that starts in 27 days.

    * Had to fill out a medical history today for a procedure I am having on June 27. Here I am, working out aerobically 7 days a week, and I had to say I can’t even run a mile. Well, I could, but does 11 minutes count? Just can’t run a lick any more, even though I have run in the Penn Relays twice, ran in high school and collegiately, etc. Oh, well, I am a mess.
