Mary Harada lowers W75 world record in mile: 2nd time this month

Mary Harada

Results aren’t posted yet, but the grapevine says Masters Hall of Famer Mary Harada of Massachusetts beat her own world record in the W75 mile yesterday at the Hayward Masters Classic, a two-day meet. A week earlier, on her 75th birthday, Mary beat the listed WR by 5 seconds. Her time June 17 was 8:11.55. Don’t know what her time was yesterday. (The previous world record of 8:16.3 was held by Suzi MacLeod, a frequent Eugene meet entrant.). The Hayward Masters Classic, making a return to Eugene after a two-year hiatus, also saw a great M65 100 by Steve Robbins, who ran 12.68, according to a friend. (Steve already holds the world record at 12.37, set in 2008.) Videos of the meet’s 10K and 5K walks are online here.

Well done Mary! More to come, I’m certain!

Mary looked awesome out there. Was a great day to compete at Hayward. Best steeple for me in over 2 years but nothing compared to what Mary accomplished!

Cathy Utzschneider tells me Mary’s time was around 7.55. Fantastic running Mary! How wonderful that you’re healthy and in form to chase down the W75 records.

    Congratulations Mary! You’re the best.

I think her time was about 7:54. She ran great. I saw the 5k this morning and she dropped out of that one, though I don’t know why.

Mary Harada did in fact take down the World Record in the W75 mile with a 7:55.74 yesterday.

Suzi MacLeod, who had set the W75 mile record last year, then set an Amercian Record in the W75 800m with a 3:35.22 today.

Harvey Lewellen also set an American Record on day two of the meet, with a mark of 10.99m (36′ 3/4″) in the M80 Super Weight.

There were great performances all around! But just a bit warm for us distance runners today… But that didn’t seem to bother Mary and Suzi much!

Great meet at Hayward. Curious when it will be next year. Would be nice to have it late June again for those going to Sacramento for Worlds.

However, Hayward is slated to host the USATF National Meet once again (qualifier for the World Champs in South Korea) and that was the last week/weekend in June last year.

Also, where does the Pre Classic fit into the schedule? It’s now Diamond League and July 3rd this year.

In addition, Oregon bidding for the West Regional which would be Memorial Day weekend (thus pushing the Oregon State Meet back a week).

Seems that the weekends are filling up fast.

Really hoping we don’t get a repeat of the situation last year where it had to be cancelled due to lack of availability.

Hayward could be scheduled for August again as it was a couple of years ago.

  9. Mellow Johnny - June 28, 2010

True, Fidel. Would rather have it before nationals to use it as great preparation but better than nothing for sure. Was in May a few years back as well as I recall.

Great meet yesterday and Saturday. First time I have been there to watch. I was really impressed with the professionalism of the meet organizers and the competitors. Also liked how friendly the competitors were with each other. Maybe I will try to drag myself out there next year.

Congratulations to Mary, Suzi, and Harvey! Mary, it was nice seeing you on the track and at breakfast.

Thanks to all for the kind words. Re the 5k – just not my day I guess – woke up during the night with pain in one shin and it was there during my warm-up. Running in spikes did not make it feel better so after 5 1/2 laps I stopped rather than risk an injury. In addition I have to admit that running a hard mile at 1 pm one day and then trying to run a hard 5k less than 24 hours later was not one of my brighter ideas. One of the many things that happens with aging – aside from slowing down – is that it takes much longer to recover from races and hard workouts.

It was great to see you again, Mary and talking to you pre-race helped my nerves. I hope I can run almost as fast as you when I’m 75! Sorry the 5k wasn’t your day, but it was pretty hot already when the race started.
