Masters exhibitions added to April meets at Hayward Field

The Oregon Track Club Masters has clout. Its membership provided many volunteers at the Olympic Trials last summer, and they’re influential in all things trackish in Track Town USA, Eugene. Now we learn from M40 runner Fidel Bañuelos  that the club is organizing a couple masters events just before the April 4 and April 18 Pepsi Team Invitational and Oregon-UCLA dual meets, respectively. The club reports: “Our goal is to showcase masters track in front of the always appreciative Hayward Field crowd as they settle in for the U of O meets.  We would like to assemble competitive fields over a full set of age ranges.  We will accommodate as many masters athletes as possible.  But if we have a large number of interested athletes, we may limit the fields to those most competitive in their respective age groups.  We encourage OTCM members to participate, but you do NOT need to be an OTCM member to enter.  There is no entry fee.” Way cool!  And what a model for masters clubs across the country!  Why not contact your local college to see if they’d allow masters events at their meets. Never hurts to ask.

The official announcement:

Here is your chance to race at Hayward Field, in front of a crowd!  The Oregon Track Club Masters will be putting on masters only races immediately before University of Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational and Men of Oregon vs. UCLA meets.

APRIL 4th – Pepsi Team Invitational (Oregon, Indiana, Kansas State, Utah State)

    * Age Graded Mile (men and women, one race)
    * 200m (multiple heats)

APRIL 18th – Men of Oregon vs. UCLA Dual Meet

    * 800m (possible multiple heats)
    * 100m (multiple heats)

Our goal is to showcase masters track in front of the always appreciative Hayward Field crowd as they settle in for the U of O meets. There is no entry fee.

If you are interested in competing, please send us an EMAIL HERE as soon as possible!  Please include the event(s) you are interested in, your age, recent best times, and your contact information.

    How about a 400 on the 18th I’d come!

    I’m afraid there will be no 400m. We are grateful to have the small window we have to sneak in a couple masters races, and we are hoping to expand things next year if things work out well.
    But, there is supposed to be a masters men’s 400m (and women’s 1500m) during the USATF Championships at Hayward Field at the end of June. See the details here: http://www.usatf.org/events/2009/MastersInvitationalProgram/meets/index.asp

Masters exhibitionists, your showcase meets are listed

Despite the troubles of last season, the Millrose Games again beckon to masters 4×4 relay teams in February 2008. Mark Cleary, the USATF Masters Invitational Program coordinator, has posted info on who can enter. Four other meets are on the masters agenda this year as well — including the Olympic Trials in Eugene in June, where fast women will compete at 200 meters (the masters men’s event hasn’t been determined yet). This is the ninth year for these masters exhibitions at major open meets. Mostly, the events have been middle-distances and sprints. Once they had a men’s 110 hurdles (featuring the handsome and witty Willie Gault).

    They should drop the “field” from our name. Out of all those meets, there was not a single field event included in any of them.

    If I am reading correctly the standard to permit entry for men 50-59 in the 60 meters at the Indoor Championships is 7.36.
    I wonder if they looked at the rankings? Only one person qualifies, having run the minimum standard of 7.36 on the button. I’m not sure my friend Bill would want to go there and race himself. I guess they will have a finish camera to make sure he wins. Did I misinterpret this information?

    A previous discussion about why field events and older age groups are not included in the USATF masters invitational program is here (see comments):

    Herm Wyatt, the USATFA 2007 Hall of Fame inductee for the high jump you wrote about above passed away on 12/6/17 at the age 86. I am his oldest son, Mark Wyatt. My family is mourning his loss. We have made several efforts to reach someone for the purpose of obtaining some record of his Hall of Fame inductee status but have come up empty. Can you advise how we might get connected?

    Mark, I’m very sorry for your loss.

    Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but your Dad is listed here as a member: http://www.usatf.org/halloffame/masters.
