Masters majordomo offers half-price entry fee

Frank Schiro, the heroin-conquering masters sprinter, is celebrating the 21st anniverary of a road race he founded 21 years ago, where all proceeds go to Integrity House, a drug- and alcohol-treatment program in New Jersey. He writes: “This race is a positive statement that athletics transcends any high from a substance — and secondly that treatment can work and people can and do get better if given a chance.” The Run for Freedom series of races (5 miles, 1 mile fun run and 50-yard kids course) will be held May 21, 2006 — starting and finishing at Integrity House in Newark.

Frank continues:
“In our present-day economy, much funding to treatment centers has been cut or canceled. Support is needed to continue important work…. I call out to all masters athletes not only in my area but any area.”
So Frank is offering half-price entry — $6 instead of $12 if registered by May 18 — to any masters runner who contacts him directly at francisschiro@aol.com.
The event already is plenty masters-friendly, and offers a $300 prize to the best over-65 finisher (based on Age Graded Tables). The award, named for Vincent Carnevale, honors a masters marathoner who died this past February. And all runners over 65 will receive yellow shirts in Vincent’s memory. Also, medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in all age groups.
