Melanie Reske, 92, of Springfield, Oregon, died Oct. 21, 2013. A celebration of life will be at 2:30 PM [Sunday] at Grace Community Fellowship in Eugene, Oregon.
Melanie competed at the Hayward Classic in Eugene last June, and was a thrower for many years. She held several age group records.” Melanie was featured in a
May 2006 story in the Eugene Register-Guard, where the headline was “Some ladies put up jam. She puts the shot.” She was quoted as saying: “It’s a good feeling to be old” and told of taking up the shot in 1989 after throwing a 7-pound rock found in her back yard 21 feet. In 2006, she was USATF Women’s Field Event
Athlete of the Year in the W85 age group. She set weight and superweight records that year. In 2007, she improved her (20-pound) superweight American record to 4.17 meters (13-8), a record that still stands. In late June, the Oregon student
newspaper reported on the Hayward Masters Classic: “92-year-old Melanie Reske was the oldest woman to compete in today’s event. Reske represented the local Oregon Track Club and threw an impressive 6.06 meters in the women’s javelin throw.” Our condolences to friends and family.

This is the third sad news that I have experienced this week. One is a very close personal friend, besides Christa and Melanie, all are Germans.
To the Reske family (met them all, incl.the daughter who officiated us during meets in Eugene) our thoughts are with you.
The family is in a state of mourning the loss of Mom (Oma)to the grandchildren. She has always been so strong, what happened took her down fast. It’s still unbelievable. The family appreciates all of the cards, letters and phone calls. We hope to see some of you at her Memorial Service on Sunday.

After reading about Melanie, I realized we have the
same birthday,January 31st.And that we both do/did the
throws of shot put, javelin, discus,hammer and weight.Of course,I wish I could be half as good as
she was.Just think this is an interesting “tidbit”.
And maybe I’ll be around a few more years but 92?
Be 80 this January.
