Mike Brown extends own M55 world record in javelin to 216-10

Mike Brown, the M55 world champ at Lahti last summer, upped his own world record in the javelin Saturday at the USATF Southeast Regional Masters Championships, aka the Bob Boal meet. He threw the 700-gram stick 66.11 meters, or 215-10, which would kick most kiddie butts. His previous WR was 65.35 (214-5) — set a year ago at Clermont, Florida. Meet results from Raleigh, North Carolina, are promised on this page but weren’t up early today. However, mastersrankings.com shows some amazing marks, including M55 sprints of 11.91 and 23.81 by Oscar Peyton. And 73-year-old Jeanne Daprano ran a 7:01 mile in 90-plus-degree conditions, I’m told.

Way to go Mike! I bet the Sonny’s up there was rocking that afternoon! Move it up more in Sac….I hear the runway is fast.

When he bettered the old world record last year, it had stood for over 10 years. Mike’s new world record is truly impressive. What impressed me even more was the fact that he stuck around and helped with the meet, marking other competitor’s throws, retrieving javelins, giving encouragement… just being a world class dude. So did Bob Kouvolo, who threw over 51 m, a personal best in the M 60. Two of the best masters throwers in the world working the meet in extreme heat after throwing a world record and personal best… my kind of role models.

Mike Brown added a great deal to the meet. As Stefan indicates, he is a class act.

Jeanne Daprano rocks. Try running a 7:01 mile at age 73 in the heat. Oscar Peyton and Charles Allie scorched the already hot track in the sprints.

Nice job, Mike! Your continued assaults on the world record are a joy to follow, especially for a fellow M55 javelin thrower. The last time I saw you (Hayward Classic, 2006) your back was so bad you couldn’t even throw, and you had to be helped off the field. Your comeback is an inspiration to us all!

I am so proud of you. I have no idea why you crossed my mind this morning after 22 or 23 years. Congratulations on all you continued accomplishments.

Coach Brown is a great guy, athlete, coach and was a really fun teacher to have at BKHS! I had him about 13-14 years ago as a world geography teacher and still remember some of his great stories!!!
