Newsletter features Bob Cozens in classic 1960 Peter Snell photo

M75 sprinter Bob Cozens is a featured subject of the debut issue the Houston Elite Track Club’s newsletter, which includes a great primer on running the 400 by Richard Riddle. But easily the best shot in the newsletter (see it here) is of Bob starting an 800 in 1960 against Olympic legend Peter Snell. Bill Collins, who I hope is making a fast recovery from his shocking illness this summer, leads the club. Toney Mulhollan, who appears to be the editor, writes: “I thought you might like to see a copy of the inaugural newsletter for the Houston Elite Track Club. It is free and you can sign up for it at the homepage of Acala-Sports.com. It contains interesting news, stories and articles on sprinting. It comes out bimonthly.â€

Bob is shown more than 40 years apart in this incredible series.

    Bob,
World class athlete is what you are all about. I never knew of your past sprinting talent untill this morning after seeing the picture of you competeing in 1960 against the best runners in the world. Future Olympians no less! Congratulations.

Terrific pictures. Off the top, so there won’t be any bias, we’re not cousins(I know that was bad but I just had to do it). We were close to being teammates. I finished my reign at U. of Houston in May of ’59 and Bob began his reign thereafter. Ollan Cassel was my roomie, for the record.

Hey, crowd, does it carry any weight that I ran in the Coliseum Relays with Herb Elliot but different events? “Tex, that doesn’t mean sickum. Herb Elliot?” Smartty

Just got a note from a teammate of Bill Collins, who writes: that he is “progressing nicely. Weight is coming back to normal, doing light workouts, noting that the swimming pool workouts are very effective. He is focusing on World Indoors in Finland.”

Good for Bob Cozens to lace them up against Herb Elliott and Peter Snell, and good for Bill Collins that he is getting better. I need to start the swimming pool workouts myself (to follow The Great Earl Fee and Nick Berra).

By the way, notice how large the bib numbers were back then (51 years ago).
