The Russians were competing! The Russians were competing!

Estonian masters athletes at Baltic meet.

In April, I mocked Bridget Cushen for getting huffy about Russians being allowed to compete in the Auckland World Masters Games. Now another Brit (or former Brit, since he got banned for sketchy reasons) Anthony Treacher is noting the presence of a baker’s dozen Russian age-groupers at an Estonian masters meet in mid-August. Anthony writes on Facebook: “Some 13 Russian nationals entered and competed at the Open Baltic Masters Championships, Pärnu, Estonia, 12-13 August 2017. This was deliberate and massive defiance of IAAF and its ban on Russian masters nationals. The Pärnu meeting was held under the auspices of EMA and WMA who otherwise have undertaken to apply the IAAF ban on Russian masters athletes. I personally oppose the unfair ban.”

Anthony continued in his post:

But as a BMAF-affiliated athlete, I felt I had to withdraw from the meeting. I feared that BMAF would refuse to accept my results if I had competed in a meeting with banned athletes. I was influenced by BMAF Secretary Bridget Cushen’s pronouncements against WMG Auckland because of the Russian participation and the DLV German Masters refusal to accept results from WMG Auckland for the same reason.

I need not have bothered. There has been a BMAF volte-face. I now have a ruling from BMAF Secretary Bridget Cushen to the effect that I as a BMAF athlete may compete with banned Russian athletes in any meeting, my results/records from meetings under the auspices of WMA and EMA — even with Russian athletes participating — will be approved and I will suffer no negative repercussions from competing with Russian athletes.

The Estonian LOC later deleted all the Russian nationals from the Pärnu results. They just disappeared. No ‘DSQ’ *’IAAF ban’. Nothing. And that appears to be the only sanction for contravening the IAAF ban. Officially it didn’t happen. All our official bodies — BMAF, EMA, WMA, IAAF — appear totally uninterested that at least 13 banned Russian masters nationals entered and competed at Pärnu in deliberate and orchestrated defiance of an IAAF ban on precisely that.

So why on earth does BMAF, DLV, EMA, WMA, IAAF even mention, let alone continue to insist on, an IAAF ban on Russian masters athletes that absolutely nobody — not even IAAF itself — intends to police?

WMA should fine the Estonian LOC for knowingly allowing the banned Russians to compete. It should suspend for one year the offending Russian nationals and the Russian-speaking Estonian national who orchestrated it all. He — in particular — needs a sharp reminder that his loyalty is to Estonia, not Russia.

Again, I gotta laugh. Let those crazy dope-addled Russkies run, jump and throw. Let them pretend to be Martians or whatever.

If the WAVA pioneers saw what was going on with the IAAF crushing masters dreams the way it did with South Africans in the late ’70s, they’d be cheering the Russian work-around.

And Anthony? Ten years ago, he was banned from competing at Boston indoor nationals. He should be going to bat for the Russians as well.

Raw Baltic results are here. But here’s a men’s results PDF and women’s results PDF. (Some events are funky.)

This how the Russians circumvented the IAAF ban. From Russian-speaking Estonian athlete Valery Zhumadilov’s status on Russian language Facebook-equivalent VK (Vkontakte), 20 June 2017 (my translation):

‘Hello, Volodya! Yes, I am aware of that. Ramir has already bought the tickets and booked the hotel. But we found a way around it. I talked about it yesterday with the Chairman of the Association, Lembit Talsepp. We decided on the following course of action. I will declare all the Russians as members of the Estonian club. So far about ten people have got together. So you can come all the same.’

    M35 Russian national Evgeny Boldin’s 11.32s 100m in -0.9 at Pärnu was otherwise a good time. Pity……

Mr. Treacher, thank you very much for your so many hate and anger with reference to Russian athletics Masters! You have did proudly your duty, exposed “these perfidious Russians” and more over as thirty pieces of silver got the right to compete with Russians everywhere. Bravo, now you can sleep calmly. And this man during last 6 years was declaring that he is my close friend and tried to speak Russian with me. There is a Russian saying – My God, get rid me of such kind of friends and I will cope myself with my enemies. As to Anthony it’s exactly his case. He knows well that the decision of IAAF headed by another malicious Brit to ban Russian Masters is completely unjust and groundless and it’s taken without presenting of any example of our guilt. Instead of protesting against this arbitrary decision as do the majority of foreign Masters Mr. Treacher demands to punish us once again and to disqualify for one year Russian Masters who were invited to the competition in Estonia as members of one of the local athletics club without any reference to Russia. By the way a group of 25 our Masters including me have officially asked the IAAF in May to allow us to take part in the 2017 European Masters championships in Aarhus as neutral athletes and no one of us have got the permission. The reason was that none of us had any doping tests in the past. I replied that it’s not our fault but the fault of organizers of European, World and other championships who are supervised by IAAF and are not taking tests when we take part in their events. Besides that I asked why athletes of all other countries who also have not doping tests as our Masters could compete at the international events but we not. Till now I have no response from the IAAF because they have any arguments to object me. It confirm once again that the decision to punish us is groundless and is pure political measure. In conclusion I officially invite Mr. Treacher to the Open All-Russian Master’s athletics championships that will take place in Sochy on September 29 – October 1 so that he could see himself how Russian Masters are eating doping by spoons.
