SoCal indoor championships again slated for outdoors

Masters hurdler Andy Hecker, the SoCal meet director and senior USATF official, sends details of his second annual Southern California Masters Indoor Championships (held outdoors). The meet is Sunday, Feb. 26, at Santa Ana College. It’s no joke. Just a serious effort to give sun-splashed masters a chance at running indoor distances before the masters indoor nationals.

Andy writes:
“This is the second attempt to host an Indoor Championship here. We have to do it by running the indoor events on an outdoor track, because we don’t have any suitable indoor facilities. Last year’s meet was kind of flooded out, though eventually we did have all races and a shot put. So we are continuing the experiment to see if this can work.
“We’ll try to do this rain or shine and we’ll deal with the conditions as they occur. After the official indoor events are finished, around 3 p.m., we will do other events as requests and facilities can be arranged. That might include 100 meters, Discus, Javelin or long hurdles.
“This meet is the beginning of our Southern California Masters Schedule . . . well actually there was the Seniors meet in Palm Desert last weekend. I update the schedule (and details) as soon as I find out about a meet at
http://www.trackinfo.org/SCmasters.html so that is the most effective place to get meet information. I also try to get it updated on the SCAUSATF site.
“We already have a location for the Outdoor SCA Masters Championships meet. This year it will be at Moorpark College on June 10. I’ll post more information on http://www.trackinfo.org/sca.html as I have it. Mark your calendars.
“Finally we are trying to form an active SCA Masters e-committee. If you wish to comment, change or get involved with the way our sport is organized, please get in touch with me at info@trackinfo.org”
Me again:
Andy’s attempt to revive the USATF Southern California Association’s masters is part of the fallout of recent elections and decisions in that association. The new masters chairman of the SCA is Mo Haneef — an appointment that effectively removes SoCal Track Club coach Mark Cleary from power in that association.
I also notice that USATF Masters is finally putting together an online manual for would-be meet directors. Long overdue, this is an effort to provide some standards to meet directors and encourage folks with aspirations to offer masters track meets period.

Here in florida we have two “Winter Sun Meets” at the USA-NTC in Clermont where we do the same, run indoor distances at an outdoor venue. The second meet was just this weekend!

Indeed, Jim. We also run the indoor pentathlon outside for those prepping for the nationals in March or for anyone looking ahead to the heptathlon nationals. This is the second year we’ve done this under the auspices of National Training Center, Clermont organized by Don DeNoon http://www.usat-ntc.com/event_track.php It’s a great facility with generally very fine weather in February. Pass the word!
