Vaulters plan ‘Jock ‘N’ Roll’ at Berea masters nationals next week

Mike Soule

Berea masters nationals start in a week, and athletes are already planning their parties. One features a band of musician vaulters. One writes: “M65 vaulter Bob Banghagel, M55 vaulter Mike Soule, M60 vaulter John Large and a couple more masters athletes to be named later, are going to be “doin’ a Gig” at a place called Tony K’s in Berea, OH, Friday evening, July 29th. We’ll all be in Berea for the USATF Masters Outdoors Championships. So let’s make this the after-Friday’s day of competition meeting place. We’re planning on being set up and performing at 7 and go till 9 so everyone can get back to the rooms and get the sleep needed for the rest of the weekend’s competitions. We’ll be playin’ a little blues, a little country a little rock n’ roll and a little……..oh shoot…..we don’t know what we’re going to play, but it’s going to be fun and it could be pretty good. So make plans to join us. Tony K’s web site is tonyks.com/about_us.shtm Hope to see you there for the fun!”

Thanks for posting this, Ken. I believe that would be Bob “Banhagel.” I believe also that his son, also named Bob, will be vaulting at Berea. Can’t recall ever having a father and son vault at one of our masters championships, but maybe someone else can.

As far as Tony K’s, that is supposed to be the place to eat in Berea. But what do I know, this will be my first trip. Having been turned down by Sacramento and not hearing anything from Berea I contacted meet management in June. I will indeed be doing some announcing there.

Wonder how you pronounce Mike Soule’s last name. Sool? Soo-LAY?

Mike has been a friend of mine since he returned to vaulting in 2006. He stayed with me recently during the National Senior Games. About six months ago I took up guitar and he has been mentoring me and played a lot at my house. This should be really fun to see.

Glad you will be there Peter!! You pronounce Mike’s name like “Soul Man”. And yes, Bob and his son will vault. Bob also attended our vaulters BBQ at my house during the NSG along with Phil Raschker, Joe and Janet Johnson, and Tom Wilson and his wife. Bob had a Fender Strat in his car he wanted all vaulters to autoigraph. I’m sure that will happen at this jam session. Bubba

Rob and I are signed up..but Rob blew up a groin at a local street vault last weekend and and it’s doubtful if he will be jumping by this week end…irst time back in over 20 did well at 13-6 blew up at 14…coming back is a battle of injuries:) He should be there to watch with Grandson Jake..

    Mike Soule:

Sorry I couldn’t take you up on your invite to join the jam session. Track season is over for me this year, regretably -would have liked to go to Berea.
Let me know when the next jam takes place! (Next years Nationals, perhaps?)

regards, Grant Lamothe (lousy vaulter but good bass/harmonica/vocals)
