Italy and Germany wrapped up their masters nationals Sunday, with expected turnouts of 1,300 and 2,000, respectively. (USATF nationals are just over 1,000. Go figure.) At least one world record is reported: Germany’s Melitta Cerwenka Nagel on Friday ran 5000 meters in 32:29.94 to crush the listed W85 WR of 32:51.05 by Russia’s Nina Naumenko in 2011. A German site quoted her as saying: “Unfortunately, I am approached too quickly. 60 seconds the first 200 meters, which has nearly cost me the record. Since I had to get out to take pace. Luckily I was able to accelerate the last three laps again. I’m happy but exhausted.” She bypassed a shot Saturday at the 1500 record due to muscular problems, we’re told. Here are results from Leinefelde.

Actually, Germany, had about 1100 entrants doing just fewer than two events each. That’s a country of 80 million people the size of Montana with a meet smack in the middle.

Spain had about 900 doing almost two events each. Italy looks like they were similar to Germany.

In the Netherlands (17 million inhabitants) we had 884 valid results by 476 athletes. Not bad in comparison.
(1 world record, by myself, 5 minutes after the start of the championship, javelin W65 31.79)

I have had the experience of running well behind Melitta for a number of years at international track meets. She is a very talented and gracious athlete. She is paving the way for middle distance women in the W 85 age group. Congratulations Melitta – well done and stay well, run strong. Her records will be a challenge for those of us who run middle distance when we enter the W85 age group.

Other double WR from Lothar Fischer in triple jump M80:
    before 8,97 (w+0,9) e then 9,04(w+0,1).
The previous record was 8.95 of Mazumi Morita in World Champs of Miyazaki 1993 and of the same Lothar Fischer in Ingelheim last 19 June.
