131K photos posted from Riccione? Have fun searching
This must be a record. The official photographers at Riccione say they have 131,534 images online of worlds. What? No outtakes? I viewed a couple hundred, and they are technically solid but bloodless. All sharpness but no drama. To view these shots, look for the “Seleziono Evento” dragdown menu in the upper right of the page. Then specify Riccione and click “Ricerca” (search). Other online galleries due soon include Lesley Richardson’s Rikko2Photo, based in the UK; Douglas J. Smith’s Canada-centric gallery; and the masters athletics gallery by Britain’s Tom Phillips. Some are under construction — like this blog (now with 1,500 entries).

maybe I am just jetlagged but when I try to look at the photos all I see is a notice that says that the image cannot be displayed – perhaps one photo displays – the rest do not – I tried looking at the photos of several friends – the same thing – most of the photos will not display
so much for that – they may have thousands of photos – but unless they display – who cares. And you need to look them up by the athlete’s number – or am I just too out of it to figure it out?
When I looked at the site a couple of days ago, it said stuff would be displayed from September 20th, and I’ve just had problems getting to the pictures too (on the 19th) so perhaps they’re not quite ready yet.
I agree with Ken that a good technical job was done by the official photographers, albeit a fairly artless one. However, as I was working alongside them every day of the Championships, I have a degree of sympathy. These guys were trying their damndest to get pictures of everyone, and often had just one chance to grab a shot. Distance runners come round again and again, throwers and jumpers get six goes, but if you were in a sprint heat, say, they got one go only, and no poses!! I felt the coverage by the meet photographers was pretty good most of the time. I covered some events where they were missing, and occasionally they sent someone who had clearly just recently been taught how to point and shoot the camera, but these were exceptions.
I’ve not yet met anyone who had no photo of themselves at all in the archive. Their cataloging was excellent – even some people in the cross-country race with half-visible race numbers had been correctly identified and cataloged. It must have made this a 24 hour business, as late afternoon and evening events seemed to be on the system next morning.
The service at the photo desks at Riccione was efficient. Yes, there were days when there was heavy demand and slow lines, but the computer system was slick, and the dye sublimation printers gave fast, excellent results. You only have to have been at the European outdoors or indoors in the last year to see how much better things were in Riccione. I got three sets of pictures of me from them, and was never in line for more than five minutes, usually around lunchtime, too.
131,000. That’s impressive and it shows commitment. Bravo ragazzi!
Come on folks, get a grip! Did you ever see five (5!!!) photographers at a decathlon, following each and every event, taking pictures of the superstars AND the true amateurs? Artless? Bloodless? Did you want Man Ray or Joel Meyerowitz, Alfred Stieglitz etc.? I heard enough negative talk from the Germans to last a lifetime. I don’t need more of the same from our fellow Americans.
P.S. And the photos are there, just look a bit closer.
Certainly a great effort. You can find your number fairly easily, however in my case, not a single picture with my number displays AT THIS TIME. Maybe they are still working on it. Anyway, as far as I am concerned – it was a great meeting! Milan
more than 1300 pictures (walk and marathon) on http://www.athletissimo.com
After writing my comment it did occur to me that probably not everything was uploaded to the web so far. I will wait a couple of days and look again. I had one opportunity to look at the photos in Riccione – the lines were long but the wait was not too bad.
This was a much better system than in San Sebastian where they would make prints of some photos and if you were not at the table when they were laid out to buy it – too bad. Linz was worse – where a few athletes monopolized the few computers used to display photos and it required much scrolling around to find the event. as a result I gave it up and saved lots of euros!
The Italian site is great in that photos are listed by athlete numbers – saving lots of time clicking and scrolling to find one’s event and see if there is a photo of particular interest.
To anyone still banging their heads against a brick wall with the Riccione photo site, please note that it now says it will be Monday September 24 before photos can be ordered.
Pity that they are so paranoid about being ripped off that the “watermark” they have put on every thumbnail almost obliterates the picture. Makes it hard to see whether some shots are actually worth buying.
