2007 Canada masters nationals sets up a two-fer
Canadian masters officials have decided to piggyback (or piggyfront) the USATF masters nationals in 2007, reports our friend Doug Smith. “We held a very successful Annual Meeting on Thursday at Sport Alliance in Toronto,” Doug writes. “The big news is that the bid from St. John, New Brunswick, was selected to host our National Outdoor Championships next year. Bill MacMackin and the St. John Track & Field Club submitted one of the best bid packages that we have ever received. The venue will be the Canada Games Stadium. They are making every effort to schedule the meet for July 28-29, the weekend before the USATF Championships in Orono, Maine. That would attract a number of USA competitors to our meet, and a larger number of our members who would want to travel to the East Coast for two big meets.”
Doug continues:
Carol Lafayette-Boyd, the Saskatchewan CMAA Director, submitted an impressive bid for the 2008 CMAA Outdoor Championships. The meet would be held in Regina. The deadline for bids for the 2008 meet will be the end of January 2007. The existing slate of the Executive (Board) was elected to their same positions. Kitty Cashman, a Toronto racewalker, was nominated as a director, agreed to the nomination, and was elected.”
Me again:
Although it’s a little sad that USATF’s choice for masters nationals might dictate the venue for our northern neighbors, at least we see two independent bodies working together, in a sense. Now when can we expect the National Senior Games Association and USATF Masters to take each other’s meets into account — or WMA and the World Masters Games?
Oh well.
One out of three ain’t bad.
One Response
I don’t know about it being sad that the Canadian masters look to piggy back on the USAFT masters venue choice. I think it is realistic – not everyone has the bucks to travel far and wide to either track meet and if we can get a “toofer” why not. Canadians like to take part in the US meet and we like to compete in their meet. This can make for a larger turnout and better competition for both meets.
Will this “wisdom” be found among the schedule makers of WMA, NSG, and World Masters Games – don’t hold your breath.
