2010 U.S. meet calendar updated; all-comers sked up, too

Dave Clingan, our Masters Hall of Famer to be, has updated the 2010 USA masters meet calendar on this site. Here it is.  Dave plans to post international meets in the next few weeks. And Andy Hecker writes: “I’d like to announce that the Winter edition of the North American All Comer Meet Directory is finished and posted. (Here it is)  . .  . I am finding new stuff to add to it every day. I hope I’ll hear about more meets after posting on masterstrack.com. Its always nicer to have somebody else at a meet to compete with you.” Andy’s list even includes meets set for today!

Andy adds:

These little meets, which are the grass roots of our sport, often publicize themselves by word of mouth at other meets. This creates a daisy chain of meets that I keep chasing down. Youth, high school and collegiate teams with coaches are organized and communicate amongst themselves. They always seem to find a place for their athletes to run. What about the other guys?

Obviously most masters, even those affiliated with a team, fall into this freelance category, but also consider there are both elite and non-elite post collegians out there looking to participate. This always has been the most neglected area of promotion.

I get e-mails from all sorts of people who have fallen through the cracks in our system — foreign athletes visiting the U.S., college graduates looking to continue, military dischargees, new people in the masters and sub-masters division with new inspiration or lofty goals.

It would be nice if a big organization, with a professional staff charged with promoting the sport, would produce a comprehensive list of meets open to any competitors off the street, regardless of age or affiliations. What organization could do that?

In that void, over the last 15 years, I’ve produced this listing, which has proven to be the most comprehensive list of All Comer meets available.

Besides these venues, and USATF’s meet database, where else can athletes find meets and meet directors find athletes? May I humbly offer you our Forum?

This also relieves my guilt. People send me information about their meets all the time, but I don’t have time to write a blog entry on each one.

So here’s your chance to get the word out — and cut out the middleman!

Not sure what to write? Not a problem!

Here’s a checklist
of things you should include in your Forum post.

Thanks for your indulgence. Now go to town (and track meets)!

So glad to see the Hayward Classic returning after a year off. My favorite meet in my favorite venue.
