4×200 relay discussed for USATF masters indoor nationals

People love relays, so it’s no wonder that more are in the pipeline. And if you don’t run middle distance (4×800) and can’t stand gratuitous pain (4×400), how about a 4×200? This also is known as short-track speed skating, since exchanges on an indoor track at high speed are good for some great pileups. According to the latest newsletter from national chair Gary Snyder: “An exhibition 4×200 relay will be added to the schedule in Boston, probably on Saturday (of the meet in late March). Final details will be made on January 20th the date of the next LOC meeting.” Also good news on the Millrose Games front. Both the men’s and women’s 4x4s will be competitive, with four teams in each race January 29 in New York. Entries are below, and they boast many stars, including Darnell Gatling, Roger Pierce, Alston Brown, Charmaine Roberts and Cheryl Bellaire.

A 4×2 at Nationals seems logical. It is the only relays contested at indoor Worlds. And, for what it’s worth – it is a lot of fun.

sounds like a great idea to me – the 4 x 200m relay – WMA indoors has the 4 x 200 and no other distance. We might see some great national and world records if the 4 x 200 becomes a usual relay event for our National Masters Indoor meets.
For sprinters this would be much more attractive than the 4 x 400. As a middle distance runner I would hate to see the 4 x 800 dropped – as it is a great chance to get club distance runners on the track to see what track racing is about, but maybe we can have all three relay events!

Good evening Everyone and I don’t have a problem with the addition of the 4×200 relay or any other relay or relays for the indoor championships. Although I would question the scheduling of the relay events. It still puzzles me why relays are on Saturday and Sunday for indoors and outdoors the relays are on the “traditional” Sunday (last day of competition). Is there any particular reason why the 4×800 and soon to be 4×200 relays have to be on Saturday? Why can’t the open 800m and 200m be moved to Saturday? I’m NOT just an athlete but a long time fan and I prefer the relays to be on the last day. Some of the performances are effected by having the relays before the open events. I would like a survey of all of those who do the open 800m on Sunday after running in the 4×800 relay. Before anyone tells me this is optional, I know that. Those who are on a competitive clubs, would probably prefer that open 800m before the 4×800 relay. My final suggestion, why does Masters Track and Field have to stick with “traditional relays”? Good idea to add the 4×200 relay but distance runners and sprinters like the medley relays also. I wouldn’t mind seeing a shot put relay or high jump relay, not to exclude the field events. While competing in high school, I got to see and compete in some of these relays. Masters Track and Field is only a name and doesn’t mean we can’t be open to new or old but new ideas to our displine. Otherwise God Bless, take care and stay warm. See you all in about 11 weeks (Boston).

    I would run a 4X200….any other W50 interested?

The 4 x 200 makes a great deal of sense for our National Indoor Championships. It is as others have noted, the only relay in the Indoor Worlds.
This relay held at the end of the meet when many folks are relatively “cooked” from all the sprint events is a more reasonable alternative it seems than the 4 x 400 AD Hoc throw-togethers we are accustomed to.
As a 400m runner, I really love the 4 x 400 relay but it clearly becomes difficult to put together a quality team at the end of the Championships. The 4 x 200 however gives the opportunity to a larger group of sprinters who get the “shakes” even thinking about competing on a 4 x 400. In addition, the 4 x 200 races would probably be more exciting and competitive and deserve to at least be spotlighted at our upcoming Nationals.
Thanks to Gary for pushing for the 4 x 200.
