Morning, Thigpen show speed at Jim Bush meet

Kevin Morning lost his M45 world record in the 200 this spring but not his hunger for speedy competition. Yesterday at the Jim Bush USATF SoCal Association Open Championships at Occidental College, Kevin ran the 100 in a windy 11.38 (2.2 mps) and the 200 in a legal (0.9) 23.07. Kevin turns 50 this year. Not sure when. National M40 champ Aaron Thigpen, recovering from injuries this spring, clocked 10.96 (into a 0.5 wind) and 22.44 (in the same race as Kevin).

The listed M50 world outdoor record is 22.58 by Dr. Stephen Peters of Britain, set at the 2003 worlds. The American M50 record is 22.79 by Bill Collins. So Kevin is on the cusp.
Also at Oxy, M35 sprinter Jeff Laynes ran the 100 in 10.25 (1.0 mps wind) and 200 in 20.66 (1.1 wind). Jeff ran a legal 10.17 at Modesto.
Jeff’s 20.66 is better than the listed American M35 record of 20.8 by Delano Meriwether wayyyyyy back in June 1978. But who knows whether it’s the fastest M35 200 run by an American since then? Don’t get me started again.
In the 1500, 39-year-old Jim Sorensen of the Nike Farm Team ran 3:45.06 (he’s gone faster this year).
In the 110 hurdles, Richard Holmes ran 14.91 into a wind. Not sure if he ran 39-inch masters hurdles or 42-inch open barriers. I think Richard turns 40 this year.
In women’s results, Mary Grene (about 43) ran an excellent 4:48.25 for 1500.

    Kevin,
Hope all is well with you and your family.
Glad to see you’re back out there, and I’m sure even at age 50 you’ll be a load to contend with.
Stay healthy and run fast my friend.

On the subject of fast 200’s by 35 year-olds, Carl Lewis ran somewhere around 20.25 in the 1996 Olympic Trials, but I think he was about 2-3 weeks shy of his 35th birthday when he did that. I don’t know if he ran more 200’s after he turned 35 – he retired in mid-1997.

    Sal, Bill and Kettrell,
Thanks for the encouragement. I know you feel like I do – we compete because we love to the sport, we’re thankful for the gift of running and we desire to put forth the best performances we can.
