National Senior Games to pay USATF to run its track meets

According to minutes posted from the latest USATF Masters T&F Executive Committee meeting, USATF will be in charge of the track meet of the biennial National Senior Games. The next one is in Houston in 2011. Jeff Brower’s notes from Thursday’s teleconference say: “USATF & NSG lawyers are ironing out the details for USATF to handle the track and field portion of the National Senior Games. About $5000 will be paid to USATF to take this over ($1000 for implement-use fee, $4000 for Games Committee oversight). This income will be tracked as a separate line item in the budget. How does this affect the Senior state meets? The indication is that NSG wants USATF to handle these in the distant future.” Very interesting. And a new revenue stream!

It’s also interesting the Jeff, our national secretary, posted the meeting minutes before they were approved — an action that generally takes place several months after a meeting. But I doubt there’s anything wrong in these minutes. Jeff does good summaries.

Just in case the minutes get taken down, here’s what Jeff posted:

National Senior Games (NSG) Agreement

USATF & NSG lawyers are ironing out the details for USATF to handle the track and field portion of the National Senior Games. About $5000 will be paid to USATF to take this over ($1000 for implement-use fee, $4000 for Games Committee oversight). This income will be tracked as a separate line item in the budget. How does this affect the Senior state meets? The indication is that NSG wants USATF to handle these in the distant future.

Anti Doping Initiative

Many groups are involved in this issue. USATF Masters needs more information, as there are many concerns, so some education is needed regarding how this has been handled at the Open level, and what exceptions Masters will need. The major questions are: Should testing be implemented, and if so, for what ages? USADA & the National office could be overwhelmed if all the current Masters athletes issue TUE forms. How/if post-competition TUE’s are handles is an additional issue.

2011 Indoor Meet

The meet will be in Albuquerque, but a public announcement will be made soon confirming this.

Annual Meeting Schedule Changes

The Annual Meeting Will be one day shorter. Gary believes we can get all our work done.

Annual Meeting Travel Expense

Carroll discussed what he knew regarding the ongoing evaluation of the entire USATF budget and how it affects Masters. He discussed some methods for utilizing the various Masters budgeted funds effectively.

Mary Trotto inquired about a schedule change for the 2010 Sacramento meet that impacted an athlete. Gary reminded everyone that meet schedules are subject to change.

Max asked about the NCCWMA meet for 2010. It may still happen.

Next conference call may be scheduled within a month.

Do you think they can work thru the details so any masters records achieved at the meet will be approved?

If USATF performs the stated duties, does this mean Sr. Olympics competitors need to pay for USATF athlete membership? Will USATF provide a sanction for Sr. Olympics meets if competitiors do not become USATF registered athletes?

We would attempt to promote Masters track at the grass roots level need to know the answers to these questions now since this is the year when athletes must qualify for Houston.

It certainly would be a financial gain if all National Senior Games Track and Field athletes are required to have USATF membership. While I am sure that many already have that, I am also pretty sure that many do not.
I am glad to see that the NSG is solving its T & F issues by having USATF handle the t/f meet. IF this is also required of state meets – that is sure to be an improvement for some of them as well.
RE drug testing for masters – this is a contentious issue and will continue to be so. I have one suggestion – USATF should follow the WMA requirement for submission of the TUE – and if the Masters Track and Field Committee is not familiar with that – go read about it on the WMA website. Otherwise you will be overrun by the submission of TUE’s for asthma medications – among others. There should be a common standard for USATF masters and WMA masters athletes. Since USATF has not a chance in the world of having WMA change its protocol – adopt that one. Those of us who participate at international masters track meets should not have to dance to one tune for WMA/WSG and another one for USATF/ USADA.

I live in Houston and still can’t find out the venue. Rice just built a new track and they used to host the regional seniors meet. U of H had it once but I would much rather have Rice. Last year was at a stadium mainly used for high school meets. Anyone know? Bubba

  7. Courtland Gray - May 15, 2010

  8. Thad Wilson - May 16, 2010

    Well said, Courtland!!

  9. John - May 17, 2010

Last year the manner in which the discus throw was conducted was an embarrassment. The officials obviously didn’t know what they were doing, and the venue was third-rate (and dangerous for spectators). I can remember saying to myself that they had better get their act together or Nationals was going to be a disaster. Maybe this is an idnication that they are in fact, getting their act together.

    Fingers crossed.

Hello I am in need of some information. I officiated the Senior games, this past June, at Turner Stadium in Humble, Texas. I have been trying to contact Lou Botello and can not seem to make contact with him. I have not been compensated and really need to speak with him. If you know how I can contact him or someone who can rectify the situation I would greatly appreciate it.
I am sorry to use this as my communication method but this seems to be the only form of communication that I have found. I only get his voice mail and I have left many messagesfor him over the past weeks.

    Thank You very much
