German masters official suspended for doping
German track officials have suspended one of their own, according to the Koops’ Web site: “The athlete Werner Schallau (SuS Schalke 96/senior class M65) was suspended by the German Leichtathletik federation (DLV) effective 13 July 2006 because of the suspicion of a Dopingverstosses. This communicated by DLV Justitiarin Anne Jakob, the chief of the anti-doping coordination center of the DLV, as expected … Monday morning.”
Further details from a rough translation of the German post:
“The DLV report continues to read: ‘The analysis on 11 June 2006 with a Dopingkontrolle on the occasion of the German multi-combat championships of the seniors in awls taken urine sample of the athlete resulted in the presence of the substances Norandrosteron and Prednisolon. Norandrosteron belongs to the group of the anabolen active substances (WADA list of the forbidden active substances and substances, group of S 1 b). Prednisolon belongs to the group of the Glukokortikosteroide (WADA list of the forbidden active substances and substances, group of S 9). For this no medical special permission was submitted.’
“Werner Schallau delivered no public statement further to the reproaches.”
In addition, aother doping case has arisen, Annette and Robert Koop report:
“The South African W60-Marathonweltmeisterin von San Sebastian Jenny Allebone was positively tested two months before their WM-success in the sun-daily heat battle the Kortisonpräparat Prednisolone forbidden by San Sebastian with a 25km-Lauf on. The south African was now warned and the result obtained by it with running at the 10.Juli2005 was painted.”
(It turns out that the June 2006 IAAF newsletter noted Allebone’s public warning and DQ.)
Robert Koop provided me some additional background on Werner:
“Werner Schallau was born September 8, 1939, and competes for Schalke 96 Club; since 1982 he became a Masters Europeanchamp… He is the masters representative of WFLV, which is a combined state association of German T&F Ass (DLV) and Soccer Ass. of Westphalia. And at least but most important: Since a couple of years he’s the spokesman of the German masters athletes, elected by the athletes for several times. Just now, he’s a candidate for re-election.”

So – since Allebone’s offense was committed in July, 2005, should not her first place in Sept, 2005 at the San Sebastian WMA marathon be withdrawn (or painted as the poor translation site puts it) – when if ever will WMA deal with these isues. They have published the failed doping tests from Linz – but have not really said anything about the two listed above, including one who got the gold in San Sebastian in the Marathon – 2nd, 3rd, and 4th should be moved up. Personally I would be more than a little annoyed to know that I lost a medal at a WMA meet to a drug cheat.
IF WMA is really serious about doping, then withdrawing medals won by those found guilty of doping should be high on their list of priorities.
