David Ortman, masters statman, stays prolific

Sprinter/hurdler/jumper/multi-eventer David Ortman of Seattle has his hands full with training and rehabbing his latest injury, but he also finds time to maintain records, rankings and write delightfully thoughtful (albeit quirky) columns on track and field. Today he gave me a heads up on his latest work, which includes stuff that USATF and WMA should be doing but aren’t — like maintaining meet records for nationals and WMA regionals. He’s also doing world seasonal rankings in some events he’s interested in. Check out his hard work (below) — and wonder how he can keep all those plates spinning at the same time.

Labor Day labors
1. http://www.geocities.com/ortmanmarchand/2006hhsc.html

I’ve posted the unofficial 2006 World Rankings for M/W High Hurdles and Steeplechase. Don’t get too excited. Most of the Southern Hemisphere have their championships coming up.
2. http://www.geocities.com/ortmanmarchand/iolist.html

Who won the M35 Decathlon in 1997? Who won the M50 100m Hurdles in 1994? If you had gone to the 1999 national masters outdoor meet, could you have placed in the M45 Long Jump? How would you ever find out since USAT&F makes no effort to make this information available on its website? I’ve compiled a list of the U.S. Outdoor (1991-2006) and Indoor (1992-2006) National Masters Track and Field Champions (M35-55) painfully entered by hand from old and lovingly archived issues of National Masters News for the following events:
OUTDOOR
Decathlon
110/100m Hurdles
400m Hurdles
Long Jump
High Jump
Outdoor Pentathlon
INDOOR
60m Hurdles
Triple Jump
Long Jump
High Jump
Indoor Pentathlon
The following is a list of some masters who have dominated their event for five or more years straight:
Decathlon – Rex Harvey ‘91-‘95
Outdoor Long Jump – Ken Medley ’91-‘97
Outdoor High Jump – Bruce McBarnette ’02-‘06
Outdoor Pentathlon – Michael Janusey ’98-‘03
Indoor 60m Hurdles – Karl Smith ’99-’03 (At some point Smith was designated a foreign competitor)
Indoor High Jump – Jim Barrineau ’92-’97; Igor Agaey ’00-‘04

I also updated the unofficial North & Central America and Caribbean WAVA/WMA World Regional Championship Meet Records 1992-2006. It is really unbelievable that WMA refuses to do this.

I could not locate any posted list of the U.S. Masters National Championship Meet Records. So I scanned in my copy of the 2005 Masters Indoor Meet Records.
I understand that a similar hard copy of the outdoor championship meet records was part of the 2006 Masters Outdoor Meet program.
If someone wants to scan in the 2006 Meet Indoor and Outdoor meet record list and send them to me, I’ll post them. Scan them as .jpg, size around 100Kb.
Also, the results of the 1997-2002 National Indoor Meets (all in Boston) can be found at
