Suzy Hess ‘happy with decision’ to quit committee
Suzy Hess’ resignation as vice chair of the USATF Masters T&F Committee might have been expected, since she also has sold ownership of National Masters News to Randy Sturgeon — and appeared to be clearing the decks for retirement after recently turning 65. But it still caught people off guard at Indy today at the USATF annual meeting. Suzy says she came to Indy not knowing whether she’d resign.
“I waited until I thought there were some viable candidates who wanted to run,” Suzy says. “At the first general competition meeting at 8:00 am, I discussed it with some people. The closer we got to the election for chair, the more I thought it would be a good thing to do.
“I am really happy with my decision. I told Phil Byrne and made the announcement before the chair was elected to give people time to think about who they wanted to nominate for vice chair.” The upshot was Janet Smith of Oklahoma got the vice chair chair job, edging Joy Upshaw-Margerum in a runoff. We’ll have more details on Janet soon.

I am sorry that Suzy resigned as vice chair but I surely do understand. When I retired from my job -I wanted to cut the strings period, not hang on doing some of the same stuff – I can understand that Suzy feels that it is time to sit back and think about her retirement plans, maybe just veg out for awhile, before making any plans. She has given a hugh amount of her time and energy to masters track both through National Masters News and USATF masters. Maybe she wants to run away and join the circus, take a year cruise around the world, or just sit at the breakfast table in the morning, reading the paper and then take a nap.
Happy Retirement Suzy – stay healthy, have fun, and don’t put off anything until tomorrow. We never know when our time is up.
Nicely expressed, Mary. May I add my thanks to Suzy for years of effort on behalf of all masters track athletes. Best wishes to Suzy in whatever endeavours she may choose. I trust we will still see her in events at Hayward Field – once they get it refurbished.
