Nolan Shaheed claims American Record: M55 mile

Nolan Shaheed stole the show today in Oregon. Competing at the Fountain of Youth Masters Mile, where M45 Tony Young was to be the headliner, Nolan ran four laps in 4:42.7 to shave 3 seconds from the listed M55 American Record of 4:45.6 by Vic Heckler in 1997. (Nolan has an unratified 4:40.2 from 2005, when he was 55.) Tony, a new M45, won the race in 4:20.3, which apparently was hand-timed. Tony missed the listed M45 AR of 4:18.8 by Ken Sparks in 1990. In last was one Henry Rono, 55. He wasn’t even the No. 2 M55 miler. He trailed M55 Michael Allison by 43 seconds.

Thanks to Dave Clingan for organizing, to the Oregon Relays for hosting, and to KP for the after party.
Conditions were overcast with a light breeze. As you can imagine from the results, Tony Young led from the gun. An ambitious chase pack went out in 67-68, with Nolan Shaheed at or near the front for much of the race. Yorges and Paulk, in particular, were not exactly fresh, having raced just one to two days earlier.
In addition to Nolan’s M55 American Record, two meet records were broken this year: M45 (Tony Young) and M50 (Steve Gallegos).
Everybody enjoyed getting to meet Henry Rono. He is as gracious, approachable, and inspirational in person as Nolan is.

I found this nice summary of the race from Kelly Johnson and Joe Dudman.
