Godbout, Scotti claim masters exhibition titles at USA nationals
Mike Godbout — the M40 world hurdles champ from Lahti — and national sprint titlist Amanda Scotti won their exhibition 60 hurdles and 60 flat races yesterday at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, site of masters nationals next weekend. In an elite race, M35 Bernard Lagat won the 3,000 in 7:57.17, beating Nike kidlet Galen Rupp, who ran 7:59.91. (Remember, Master Rupp: Old guys rule!) Godbout’s winning time of 8.11 was two-hundredths off the listed American indoor age-group record of 8.09 by Derek Pye, who was runner-up yesterday. Derek is entered next week in masters nationals, but Mike isn’t. (Probably saving his nickels for Sacramento.) Meanwhile, we got word today that Al Joyner, the Olympic triple jump champion, isn’t coming to masters indoor nationals. Sigh. This is the second time he’s flaked out.

Congratulations to all who represented our program so well. Tremendous hurdling and sprinting, to say the least.
In going over the usatf.org Web site I noticed that the times in the women’s 800 (preliminaries) ranged from Phoebe Wright’s 2:03.99 to the 11th-place mark of 2:14.46. Our own Alisa Harvey, age 45, has already run 2:14.38 this year. How about that?
Back to the sprints, I don’t believe that any of the first 6 women are below the age of 50, which makes these results even more impressive.
Congratulations Mike!
Very close race with you and Derek.
Just want to say congratulations to all the hurdlers who represented us Masters.
More on Al Joyner:
Sunday’s Tom Blair column in The San Diego Union-Tribune reports:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/feb/27/please-dont-take-this-personally/
Basketball legend Bill Walton, former SD Sockers great Julie Vee and Olympic gold medalist Al Joyner are on board as honorary commissioners for San Diego’s Senior Olympic Games in September. They won’t compete, of course, but according to the rules, all of them — Joyner (51), Walton (58) and Vee (61) — are age-appropriate.
Me again: Maybe Al will jump in San Diego anyway.
Thanks Don it was a blast, wish you could have been here. Yes Ken, I am saving nickels for Sac. Gotta save money and vacation days.
Congrats Mike! Had a really nice time talking with you and yes, I owe you a ‘pop’…hahaha. Again, congratulations on your win.
Derek, looks like you and Don Drummond will be heading the M40 hurdles field in Albuquerque on Saturday. It appears that you will compete at either 4:50 (first heat) or about 4:54 (second heat).
One question: I thought your name was pronounced “Pie” as in cherry pie. However, I heard a strange pronunciation at one of the meets. What is the correct way to say your last name?
Congratulations to the women also for the fine showing at the 60. Impressive times.
Peter, it is pronounced “Pie” as in the dessert. Every now and then, I will hear it pronounced differently because of the spelling. Thanks for asking, and also thanks for the information on the heats…looking forward to competing with the legendary Don Drummond. Master’s Track has been a wonderful experience.
Congrats to Brenda Matthews who ran a great race. Can’t wait to see her run the 60 meters in New Mexico. You go girl!!!!!
Great running, ladies!! Congratulations to all!
(great job Amanda1)
Thank you, Derek. I will announce you as (a) out of Long Beach State and (b) the current American indoor recordholder. Glad you are enjoying the masters program.
Congratulations Colleen, you rock!
Thanks Derek, you are a great hurdler. Knowing you are racing FORCES me to be a better hurdler, so thanks. Actually I said the “winner” buys a pop (just in case you beat me, HA). So I’ll buy one for you this time.
@ Peter…sounds great. I appreciate your time and interest. I’ll try to find you and introduce myself on Saturday.
@ Mike…you got me, again. Hey, there’s a nice picture of you on the usatf site. Shuttle hurdles on the horizon??? Lookin’ forward to that!
