Record chase: Will Alisa or Nolan end up with the most in 2011?

In a postal meet of my own concoction, W45 Alisa Harvey nipped M60 Nolan Shaheed in the 800 Saturday — Alisa clocking 2:13.67 in Fairfax, Virginia, to Nolan’s 2:13.94 in Claremont, California. But that’s not the fun part. Running against the kiddies at collegiate invitationals, Alisa and Nolan both notched their latest American age-group records. Alisa smashed the listed 800 AR of 2:18.72 by DeeDee Grafius dating back to 1997, and Nolan ran a 1500 at the same meet in 4:30.39, lowering his own AR of 4:31.93 from May 2010. Yowza! Further coincidence: Both were USATF Masters Athletes of the Year in 2007. Each shared details of their latest records.

Alisa and Nolan are middle-distance marvels. Who will be the top record-setter?

Nolan writes:

The weather was perfect on Saturday and there were around 25 young men in my race, so all I had to do was stay in the pack. My first lap was 70 seconds and I was at 2:25 at 800 meters and 3:38 at three laps. (See results here.)

The most interesting thing … was after the race I was debating with David Parke and Rich Burns if I should go through the hassle of trying to get the papers signed from officials who don’t care too much about masters runners. (Sometimes it has taken hours before they decide they have time to sign) and if it will be ratified anyway.

David went right up to the meet announcer and told him I set an American record and the elderly announcer was so impressed that he made a wonderful announcement about masters runners and my record, which made it very easy when Rich introduced me to the meet directer and gave me a records form. (Rich set a 3000M NR at the same meet last year.)

The meet directer took the time to walk with me personally to the starter and timing guy who both smiled and congratulated me and made me feel as if I had done something good.

Alisa wrote me about her 800 AR at George Mason University and the Mason Spring Invitational. (See results here.)

The distance segment of the race was run in the evening. The weather was a touch cool: 50-degrees and cloudy. Thank goodness there was no wind. I am pleased with the outdoor season opener. I have not had a chance to train for speed yet this season. It has been mostly cool, wet and windy this spring.

I simply had no change of gears after a modest first lap of 65 seconds; the leaders were 64 seconds. I tried to make a move on the back stretch but I had no speed in my legs. I am pleased with my recovery and energy after the race.

Now don’t hate on me for this, but I can’t resist asking:

Here are the results for Nolan and Alisa’s races:

Sensational performance by Nolan, and I am so glad that the meet director took a personal interest in him and helped with the record application.

As for Alisa, what can I say. How about setting an American mark and being able to say later “I had no speed in my legs.” Yowza. Hope this mark will go through.

right on, nolan!! see you at rio hondo league finals…

  5. Truthiness - April 12, 2011

It’s not how many records they set. That has nothing to do with it. It’s how many of their records make it through the morass of paperwork requirements and are accepted.

  6. Roger Pierce - April 12, 2011

Two of our absolute finest Masters competitors. Way to go!!!!!

  7. tOnY yOuNg - April 12, 2011

Now, that I know who “shorter than Frank is” going back to La Canada times, (incl. Pete Magill) where do I get to see you in a Masters Champs? Maybe Sacramento?

Just came back from CA – Arcadia HS Invite, Nolan,
next year, I could really use your help!.
So, please schedule any record races on a different day, also, your job can wait…

    Hug,
    see ya soon
    Christel

  10. Rich Burns - April 12, 2011

Great to see your run Nolan. You are always an inspiration. Alisa always good to read about your exploits on the track.

  11. Paul - April 13, 2011

    Congrats to Alisa and Nolan.
Disagree with Keith McQuitter’s comments pasted below:
“…70 80 year old are nice to hear about but the ellete(sp) masters runners is what masters track is all about…”

He may only care about elites. But I think most
Masters athletes feel that COMPETING between 30-100 years is what it’s all about, whether elite or otherwise.

  12. Ralph Maxwell - April 14, 2011

Hey, Nolan. Congrats on your continuing magnificent accomplishments. Every record you break makes me that much prouder to share Athlete of the Year honors with you.

  13. keith McQuitter - April 17, 2011

Paul, im not saying that older runners are not important, cause im going to be there soon but I like to hear about whats going on in the younger age group not just the older runners,we all make the sport, not just the elites, nolan is older then me,alisa is younger, its not many 60yr olds that can run the 800 in just over 2min or a 70yr old in 3min,love all that run masters not just the 50yr old group I just like to see more of the top masters at my age, thats all,
