Masters sizzling at Penn Relays; American record in women’s 4×4

Tenth place in Friday’s women’s 4×4 at Penn may have slipped under the radar. But look again. The Central Park Track Club/New Balance team of Marie-Louise Michelsohn, Deborah Barchat, Judith Tripp and Mary Rosado clocked 6:17.80. That’s almost 42 seconds under the listed American W60 club record of 6:59.09 by SoCal Track Clubbers Darlene Backlund, Kathleen Frable, Yoko Eichel and Jolene Steigerwalt at 2010 Sacto nationals. See all the Friday results here. Also word from Penn: “Most masters competitors who participated in the Penn Relays may not be aware of this . . . The clerk at the awards table is awarding medals to the top five places rather than the normal three. This applies to Masters 100 meter sprint competitions only. The medals for fourth and fifth places are bronze.” Phil Felton is the masters majordomo. Great work, Phil!

Meanwhile in Des Moines, Iowa—they had another cattle call masters men’s 800. Results are here. Congrats to defending champ Nick Berra, who might fly back to Penn for a Saturday relay (as he did last year):

Thank you for the nice recognition.

Congrats to teammate Nick Berra. Great job ! No, Nick did not make the Drake/Penn double this year but GPTC still managed 2nd place in the M40 4×400. Great weekend for track.

  4. Ken Stone - April 30, 2011

Nolan Shaheed set ANOTHER world record today! Ran 1500 in 4:24 at Striders Meet of Champions for an M60 age-group record. Story and photos to come.

Congratulations to Central Park 60+ women on their world record! You were very inspirational out there. And loved the team “Orange Crush” who threw everyone a curve ball in the 4X400—coming out of nowhere (rumor has it they all ran at Tennessee?)and running a tremendous race. And of course to Athena, who brought home the gold (again). Lastly, I want to commend all the women’s teams–we had 10 toe the line, which was the best turnout I’ve ever seen for a women’s masters relay.

Congrats to all the Masters who ran at Penn it was a great experience for me to see you strut your stuff

Thank you, Don. Yes, the listed world record for the M45 4 x 400 is 3:28.36, established by Great Britain at the 1997 Worlds in Durban. All 4 men on Southwest Sprinters are indeed 45 or over, and the announcer for masters at Penn (Burt Ritchie) was right on top of this.

We can only hope that this record will be ratified. Note that about 1 hour earlier, Bobby Whilden of Houston Elite ran 13.68 in the M75+ 100 dash, 0.04 sec faster than the legendary Payton Jordan’s 13.72 of 19 years ago (the listed American mark).

Bobby’s mark will not be submitted for ratification, however, because the wind was 2.4 mps and thus over the limit. Still, Bobby really caught the attention of the big crowd with his brilliant effort.

Congratulations to David Jones, Tony Echeandia, Marcus Shute, Khalid Mulazim, and Bobby Whilden for being the “stars of the day” in my book.

The womens 4×400 was very exciting and entertaining. The womens anchor leg for the aforementioned record breaking 60 year old team was waving to the crowd as she ran or jogged on the back straight. I and my significant other commented that it looked similar to someone greeting friends while running a 10k. Or a victory lap!

  10. Tony Echeandia - May 2, 2011

    Don & Peter,
Thank you for mentioning what we did!

  11. peter taylor - May 2, 2011

You are welcome, Tony, and your 51.37 split was excellent, to say the least. Many a collegiate relay runner at Penn did not run that fast.

For example, in the College Men’s 4 x 400 CTC on Friday at 5:20 PM, only 3 of 9 teams averaged better than 52.65 per leg. Your team, which was 45+, averaged 52.03.

  12. Tony Echeandia - May 2, 2011

Wow Peter that definitely an ego boost, I have been feeling good this year and obviously our team is deep with Sprinters. Our M40 group had some injuries and would have run even faster than us. Thank you again for your support and help!!!!!!

This was brought to my attention today by a friend or should I say a mole. Sorry I am quoting a phrase from the blogmaster, Marie Michelson holds the American Mile record for 60 and 65 which are superior in time to the recently run 60 4×400 run at Penn Relays.I am somewhat naive to Masters performances and checked your records listing W60 5:57, W65 6:16 , W60 4×400 6:17 and the previous record listed 6:59. I am new to Masters Track and was very excited to attend the Penn Relays ,but I believe I find myself looking through rose colored glasses. Would love some clarification on this subject.

  14. Michael Roth - May 5, 2011

On Sat morning @ Penn, Dave Talcott qualified for the 2011 USA Nationals in the RW. I believe his performance also gets him to the OT in 2012 too.

  15. Gary Leigh - May 6, 2011

Ken -You got the part about medals for the Masters 100M dash for the top 5 places. I finshed 4th in the 55-59 age group and Phil Felton confirmed to me only the top 3 places get medals.
