Robbins the ringer: CBS station unfairly embarrasses Frisbee kids
Steve Robbins, our M65 world sprint champ, was profiled the other day on his local Cleveland CBS station. Most of the segment was the usual oh-my-god-this-guy-is-fast-for-a-geezer tripe. That’s fine. All publicity is good. But then the reporter does something creative. He grabs three college kids playing Frisbee and says: Hey, would you race this 68-year-old guy over here? Of course, they say yeah. Then Steve smokes them on the infield grass. What a hoot. But will the kids and their tender egos survive?

Now this is good publicity. The video fools the average viewer by initially showing Steve doing a slow trot, setting up an expectation that he is just an old guy who might think too much of himself.
When we get to the actual race, everyone looks fast, but Steve prevails. Yes, the truth comes out.
VERY oool. Always been a big fan of Steve’s. As a masters vaulter I am of the belief that I have a lot to learn from elite masters sprinters, gymnasts and weightlifters. I look for and watch Steve at every big meet. LOVE for him to get great attention like this.
Steve, that wasn’t fair….those kids never had a chance!!!!!Way to go..
This is very good! And it’s very fun!
Congratulations to Steve.I agree with Bubba Sparks:
I have a lot to learn from elite masters (sprinters, throwers, jumpers and so on).
Not to win, but to be a competitive (master-)athlete. And to try.
Thanks Ken for the video
Now, that’s how you do local news. Nice job, channel 19.
Shame on you Steve. You suckered those poor kids into that race. We miss you in the Northwest. Stay healthy.
Hey, check the video tape…I think Steve caught a flier in that race…well, he still wouldv’e beat them anyway 🙂
Steve, where’s your hat? After all those years and all those races, something was missing!
Stay healthy, until we meet again!
Those young kids, with their full heads of hair, didn’t stand a chance. Kinda like one of those Olympic swimmers who shaves their entire body, Steve’s sorta found a way to cut out much wind resistance.
Awesome! I liked the whole video, except for the question that they asked Steve’s wife…that was a stupid question. But she responded well! Why would you tell anyone they’re too old for something? The only thing we masters track athletes get too old for is our current age group…and then we get a new one!
Those kids got their lunch money taken. I love it!!! Good job Steve!
🙂
Nice job, Steve. You carry the Masters Sprinter’s flag well..! However, you probably ended the careers of three potential track athletes that day..;-)
Thanks, Paul. I miss seeing you at the major meets. Hope you’re back training and shooting for a big 2012.
sure put a grin on my face…a few years back in the Holmdel (nj ) International , i was in a masters 100 heat, with a few post collegians …mid twenties, on the starting line, complaining that they were put in with the “old guys ” after the race i patted them on their backs and told them “don’t worry guys…keep working on your starts and finishes “
Steve, You da MAN . . . experience trumps youth EVERY TIME! : )
