Wanna be on the Beeb? Interview subjects being sought

The Beeb is the BBC — some foreign radio channel or something. Don McGrath of the 50 Interviews project writes: “I was contacted about helping with a documentary for the BBC on senior athletes over 65. They are looking to feature communities of senior athletes that are inspirational and motivating to the younger generation in the UK. I’ve provided them contacts for people in the Southeast U.S., Southwest U.S. and Mountain region. They are also looking for good contacts in active communities in New York or the Northeast U.S. I thought I’d reach out to see if there is anyone on this list who can help me find someone who would be a good contact. If you have interest or know of someone who could be such a contact, let me know ASAP.” Interested? Write Don here.

    Sir,
I take umbrage at your depiction of the BBC as “some foreign radio channel or something.” I would remind you Sir that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) represented a shining beacon of hope for the oppressed peoples of Europe throughout the Second World War. The BBC also transmitted the voice of Vera Lynn to comfort our troops abroad at that most difficult time in our history – when you Yanks were “Overpaid, Oversexed, and Over Here.”
    Sincerely,
    Disgusted in Tonbridge Wells.

As usual Anthony is obnoxious – perhaps Ken misstated the role of the BBC – but your nasty comments about the US armed forces is way way out of line. Without the US armed forces – you sir would be speaking German.
and please spare us some inane comment about how you are “just joking.
Do you realize what a joke you are?

You complete and utter gormless, humourless, fool! Everybody but you understood that Ken was not serious about the BBC. And that I was not serious about the Yanks.
As to the topic. I declare I am M70 and I am willing to volunteer to the BBC my priceless experiences as a masters athlete. My fee will be many pints of English ale and free access to English culture and humour in the BBC archives. Dick Barton Special Agent, Hancock’s Half Hour and the Goon Show will do for starters. After this grim experience, anything non-American. Thank you.

Sorry, the system made above reply from the despicable “Anonymous” – should of course be from Anthony Treacher.

Oh dear. It’s you Ken, isn’t it?
Yet again, you are too hasty and do not read things properly.

Does anyone remember the movie “Stripes?” There’s a scene where a very intense guy named Francis declares that anyone who crosses him, he will kill. Sargeant Hulka listens to this rant and drawls, “Lighten up Francis.”
I wish everyone around here would lighten up.

Me intense? Well, well, well. I can’t summon up enough intensity for the 400m or anything these days. Probably not for you either.
Actually Liz, I (modestly) thought my posting was humorous and well-written. The last thing I could ever imagine was that reaction from “annoyed”. And of course the Yanks being “Overpaid, Oversexed, and Over Here” is not mine at all. Assumed people knew that.
To paraphrase Winston Churchill: “Great Britain and the United States. Two great nations divided by a language (and a sense of humour.)”
Just out of curiosity how did you and others actually read my posting? Honestly?

Anthony, my comment was directed toward the first anonymous poster.

Having lived in both UK and USA (among other places) I do agree most definitely with the existence of two quite different senses of humour(or is that humor?) When I first saw Ken’s beeb comment I smiled and thought – OK this is going to generate some activity! For me, it was like watching two brothers engage in a friendly sparring match – best to stand back and watch the fun. Both the beeb and yank comments are usually offered with smiles and warm hearts.
