Americans may outnumber Europeans 3-1 at Kamloops

With three weeks before the drop-dead deadline of February 1, it appears from the USATF Status of Entries page that about 210 Americans will vie for medals in Kamloops this March. Team USA at indoor worlds will be a powerhouse — with W60 Phil Raschker entered in her usual gazillion events, W55 Rita Hanscom looking for a pentathlon WR to go with her hep record from Lahti, and M55 Bill Collins going for another 60-200-400 sweep despite being one of the oldest in his age group (he turned 59 in late November). Our oldest team members are M90s Ralph Maxwell (WR hurdler) and Orville Rogers (WR miler). Between them, they’re entered in 15 events. So who’s the competition from Europe? Not much. The Koops in Germany report “Only 53 German masters athletes (19 of them women) have entered. . . . By comparison, two years ago in Clermont-Ferrand there were . . . 368.” No Austrians entered, they say. Only two to four from Switzerland. The Brits’ deadline is January 9. No entrants list yet.

    Hi Ken
Well I havnt seen the figures yet but I know that our entry will be low, I suspect we will not even make 100. I lot of my usual buddies are giving this one a miss. Its a shame but there you go. I will be there however competing and snapping away.

    What about the Canadians?

  3. Anonymous - January 6, 2010

Are we suppose to receive a discount on uniforms? I recall reading in thist blog that uniforms were suppose to be 30-40% off regular prices. But the store prices are member and non member prices and the difference between the two prices is not a 30-40% discount. Does anyone have information about the discounted uniforms? I may be mistaken….

  4. Anonymous - January 6, 2010

After you are listed on the USATF entry page there is a special link to purchase discount uniforms.

  5. Anonymous - January 6, 2010

I went to this page. The discount is not 30-40%.

  6. Anonymous - January 6, 2010

Dont forget the Aussies. About 35 of us coming.

  7. Christel Donley - January 6, 2010

    Anonymous once, anonymous twice…
I tried to order and found out, that we only get the membership %.
We were promised to get at least 20% off. Does not work either. So I called Blake Roebuck, the Merchandise Coordinator in Indy and was told, that’s all we can get, the membership price, his words were:” that’s as low as I can go…
Looking at my bill, I did get 20% of the original price, so that’s it.
When I read Sherry Quack’s note, it looked like we would get 20% of the membership price. Not so.
Those of us who went shopping at the Outlet Store in Indianapolis – during the convention –
got absolut bargain prices, but the selection was not what we needed to conform with the uniform requirements.

  8. Liz Palmer - January 6, 2010

Am I correct in reading that you only need the uniform top? That you can supply your own shorts or tights for the lower half? 🙂

  9. Michael V. - January 6, 2010

Liz, thats the way I read it.

  10. Mary Harada - January 6, 2010

“The official uniforms are either an authentic 2000 (the red and blue “Spiderman” uniform), or 2004 (white body with a black “USA” on the front) National Team Uniform or newly created replica uniform with the same logos and similar colors.” I have copied and pasted that from the uniform page of the USATF WMA entry page – bottom – click on uniform. It says 30-40% discount – but that is not true. And they will check to make sure you have an officially approved top.
As for shorts, etc – wear what you want – personally I think we should all turn up wearing Hawaiian prints. If I had a pair of shorts like that I would wear them – but – alas I do not.
I have tights that I bought at various sporting goods stores – as the USA uniform shorts for women are pretty bad – I do not wear “boy shorts” that show half of my butt nor do I wear bun huggers. At my age – the less I display of my body the better.
Bring warm clothes – Kamloops in early March can be chilly. A nice warm-up suit is good – unless you make a habit of flying off to lots of WMA meets – it is expensive to buy the USA ones that USATF sells – but the 2004 one is really nice looking if you are in the market for a new warm-up.

  11. Liz Palmer - January 6, 2010

Hey, I like the Hawaiian print short idea. I have a pair of Stars and Stripes shorts I’ll bring! If anyone is interested in getting a pair of wild and crazy shorts, check out http://www.soark.com. They have flag shorts and shorts with patterns of tie dye, snake skin, confetti, stripes, etc. And Mary, they have splits, non-split, and longer cut styles too.

  12. Gary Snyder - January 6, 2010

    Hi Everybody,
Acceptable shorts/tights should match the uniform top. The key word is a ‘uniform’. Other countries has filed a protest against USA for not conforming to the uniform we’ve submitted to WMA.

Why the heck don’t we have Indoor Nats in somewhere warm during early March (SoCal, Phoenix, etc.) and Outdoor Nats where its gorgeous in July (Coastal CA, Northwest, Colorado, Upstate Northeast). Just seems like it would make sense. I realize Indoor means “indoor” but getting there and staying there for a few days would be much more pleasant if they were in a slightly more weather friendly locale.
Worlds too should go with the weather where possible.
    Just wondering..

  14. Mary Harada - January 6, 2010

“uniform” “accptable”= what? Who is the arbiter of this? Unless the USATF mandates that we purchase shorts/tights/ from the website – 2000/2004 USA Olympic stuff – how is one to know what is “acceptable” or “uniform”. Must my tights be color coordinated with my top? Is the blue blue enough, the red red enough, the black black enough? Is it a solid color or can I wear a red/white/blue pair of tights? Must the color be solid or can it be stripes? Who decides this? When does the inspection take place?
You are tossing this out as if we all “know” this – well I do not know this – and I have been to more than 10 WMA meets and this is the first I have heard of the “uniform”, “acceptable” rule.
BTW – which countries have filed protest(sic) against the USA for failing the fashion test?

  15. Ken Stone - January 6, 2010

Private source says: Expect 100 Germans at Kamloops. We’ll see. . . .

  16. Terry - January 6, 2010

The DLV makes no mention of late registration for Germany, but you can watch the entrants here:

The reason we don’t have indoor nationals in warmer climate locations is that MOST of those locations DON’T have indoor tracks to host the event, Or those locations ex. Texas A & M. are not easy or cheap to get to .

  18. Kamloops or Bust! - January 6, 2010

    Gary,
For women, we have the crop top, singlet and the shirt while they have the same logo they are not same. I know for a fact that not everyone has to wear the same style top. I looked at pictures of our 4×4 relay team 35-39 from Finland 3 of the women had cropped and one had a singleto so technically speaking they are not uniformed. Like Mary, I wonder if my shorts have to be blue red or white, or do they have to be all three colors or can they be blue with a white strip red with blue stripe, white with blue stripe, blue with red stripe, what about polka dots can they be white with blue dots or red with white dots….I think you get the drift. Breath deep. I will be in Kamloops with my hawaain shorts. Blame it on Liz 🙂 Thanks for the idea.

  22. Italy will be well represented - January 7, 2010

Sources tell me Italy will be in its normal full representation. Turn out is getting larger!!!!!

  23. John Altendorf - January 7, 2010

I’m just curious. Do athletes from countries other than USA, personally pay the entire cost of travel, entry and uniforms for WMA events?

  24. Anonymous - January 7, 2010

Yes almost all athletes from other pay all of there own cost. Some of the smaller countries that send only a handful of athletes will help out with expenses for there athletes.

  25. Robert Thomas - January 7, 2010

Everyone you have to make sure that you go to the uniform link through the World Masters Championships uniform page to get the discount. If you just go to the merchandise store from the USATF home page you will not get the discount that is intended for the athletes that are going to worlds. I realize that everything on the list is not 30% as originally stated. The site now states that the discount is up to 30-40%. At this point I think this is the best we can hope for. We will continue to work on this for future World Championships.

  26. Michael V. - January 7, 2010

FYI for the throwers amongst us. Jumpstart Athletics out of Edmonton will be supplying all the throwing implements for the Championships. I specifically asked about hammers and was informed they’ll supply Polanik hammers. I’d guess Polanik weights as well. Good stuff. So I’m not going to worry about shlepping my hammer to Kamloops. A big thank you to Ian Mapplethorpe.

  27. Marjorie Milligan Jackson - January 7, 2010

Right now the prices on the WMA page are HIGHER than going to the online store. I compared the Women’s Singlet. If you go through the Championship Link the cost is $55.00, the online store is selling the same top for $49.50. The navy tops at the WMA site are going for $30,$40 and $30. If you go to the online store the same tops are $22.50, $22.50 and 22.50(member price).
It is the same with the womens half tights WMA price $40, member price on the online store $36.
    Hmmmm…..

  28. Feel Cheated - January 7, 2010

I tried to order uniforms from the USATF/WMA site and at first could not even access it. (even tho I was entered) I emailed USATF and then it was fixed. Then when I could get in I was frustrated to see the discount was not what was quoted. It also hinted that if you did not hurry and order you might not get what you needed. So being a bit peeved at not getting the 30-40% I still ordered. I was afraid I would not get a required uniform. Now is the discount more than what I received? I really feel a bit cheated. The USATF certainly does not appear to be supporting their USA team members. Are we just cash cows? Can we mix and match the 2000 “spiderman” pieces with 2004 pieces? Just how many uniforms combos are out there? I guess as long as it says USA somewhere its ok.
Mary Harada you tell it like it is, you rock!!!!

  29. Robert Thomas - January 7, 2010

Marjorie you have it backwards. Maybe you got the pages confused. The womens singlet in the online store is 55.00 regular and with your membership it is 49.50. In the WMA STORE it’s 38.50 and with your membership number you get a 10% discount which makes it 34.90. So I’m not sure what you saw. You have to submit the order to get the additional 10% off for the world meet. So you statement is incorrect. Now everything is exactly 30% and you will still get an additional 10% at checkout. It’s a step in the right direction.

  30. Anonymous - January 7, 2010

Okay, Robert. We get 30% off of the WMA prices? Is this correct? If so, I will go back and do the math to make sure I am not being taken to the cleaners.

  31. Roger Price - January 8, 2010

Has anyone out there been wearing any of the Olympic clothing? Plenty of people must have them. Now are they sized? Like normal running singlets, shorts, shirts, bras, etc.? Do they run small, normal or large? I would hate to order a singlet that would normally be my size, only to find out that they run really small, and I would not be able to breath. Or big, and be swimming in it.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Roger

  32. Mary Harada - January 8, 2010

I do not know about the mens sizes but the women’ssizes for the spiderman stuff seems to run small – while the 2004 (white, red, black(what happened to blue you ask) seems to be sized a bit larger. I think the Spiderman era was that of teeny tiny clothes for women – and Nike seems to have recovered a bit from that lately.
Believe it or not – I am a medium in most Nike women’s clothes – tops -bottoms – so that tells you something about how Nike sizes women’s clothes (except the 2000 track suit – small is big – go figure.)
For those of you who do not know me – I am 5’1” on a tall day – and 100lb – after dinner.

  33. Weia Reinboud - January 8, 2010

In my country the national federation sends a physiotherapist and 1 official to WC’s and EC’s. That’s all we do not have to pay ourselves. The official takes outdated national uniforms with him, so we can fit them and buy them (for a very low price). Maybe that’s an idea for other federations too.

  34. G Dixon - January 8, 2010

Oh boy to they run small! But I’m a 220 lb penta guy. I ordered xl and it was waaaay small. (the Athens uni’s) I think the little distance guys must have been the models for the sizes. I also exchanged the racing shorts for the running short. The racing one would have been great when I was 17, but at 52, I want a bit of coverage. I did send back four pieces to the USATF store that did not fit and the turn around time was terrific. Comps to the store for the exchanges and the speed.

There are hundreds of Canadians entered for Kamloops with the numbers going up every day. Many of Canada’s best masters athletes will be competing.
It is a nice new facility in Kamloops and should be a well organized meet. For anyone looking for flights to Kamloops there are good seatsales from Calgary to Kamloops on Air Canada and Westjet. Calgary has many direct flights from the US and Europe.

Donna, Is there anywhere we can see a list of the Canadians entered?

  38. Anonymous - January 10, 2010

Imagine that! The Americans out-number the Europeans 3 to 1 when the meet is held in the Americas. Who’d a thunk it? 
As far as the uniforms are concerned, I pay my own way to the meet. Pay my own housing. Pay for my own transportation and pay for my own food. If USATF thinks that I should wear a uniform, then let them pay for it (and I don’t mean as an addition to entry fees) I think that I should be able to compete in my underwear if I am so inclined (and it doesn’t violate any local laws)

  39. Frank Speedy Condon - January 10, 2010

How do you check the Status of Entries for non -US athletes ??

  40. Susan Condon - January 10, 2010

RE: Americans outnumber Europeans at Kamloop
    Dear Ken,
I just read your aricle, and I have one question…how did you manage to leave out my father: Frank Speedy Condom M65-69 ?? He is a World Record Holder, and also hold numerous, consecutive National Records.
He is in training and going to Kamloops, if you don’t know who he is, please be on the look out for him, he ia an amazing athelete.

  41. Ron Kirkpatrick - January 11, 2010

I was happy to see that Ralph Maxwell would be competing. I was amazed to see his WR performance in the 300 hurdles in Spokane in 2008, so wish him similar success in Kamloops. I also wish I could be there to watch, but alas it is not to be this year. Ron K.

  42. Donna Dixon - January 13, 2010

I believe that the list of Canadians entered will be available soon and I will post any info I receive.
