Fox TV Atlanta reveals training secrets of world-class Dapranos

Beth Galvin of the Fox TV affiliate in Atlanta did a nice report the other day on one of the nicest all-star couples in our sport: W75 Jeanne and M85 Bill Daprano. She’s been grabbing the headlines lately, so it was great for Bill to get some attention. Their story has been told before — of two widowed people who discovered each other and became an athletic success story. But I love reading new things, especially about their training regimen. It’s hard core. Also loved Jeanne’s sense of humor: “Jeanne’s got four world records, including being the first 70-year-old women to break seven minute mile. She thinks it’s a sign God likes a strong woman. ‘I just think He’s laughing and rejoicing and saying, “This is what my temple needs to be like,” Jeanne said.” Check out the video!

ah ha – the secret is out – hard physical training is the key to Jeanne and Bill’s success. It is not something you can buy in a bottle or jar that promises 60 seconds off your 400m time or longer throws or higher jumps. Back to the gym folks – (that includes me).

Is it possible to find out what kind of things
to do at the gym to increase all this stamina?
Or what specific exercises increase core strength,
    etc?
Or just ask fitness trainer to supply answers?
Thank-you anyone>I have tried some things, but it
    gets “boring”.
I couldn’t bring up the video in case it showed some
    pictures.

Terrific competitors-Amazing people! I was introduced to Bill at my first masters meet in 2008 and he rattled off a list of stats from my coaching career from 8 years earlier – sharp as a tack! I followed Bill and Jeanne’s competitions in Kamloops and got to know them a little better there – tenacious will. I had lunch with Jeanne in Sacramento and shared testimonies about our faith – wonderful spirit! It’s people like this that endear me to masters track & field. A long and happy life to you both and I’m grateful for our friendship.

Phyllis – video shows some of the weight training they are doing. Best thing is to find a trainer who will help you set up a good weight training program for core as well as lower and upper body but NOT doing real heavy weights nor treating you like you will fall apart if you pick up anything heavier than a toothpick.

Their trainer is bodybuilding legend Lee Haney, who won eight Mr. Olympia titles back in his competitive years, one more than Arnold Schwarzenegger won.
