Heavy challenges for Tony Young, Alisa Harvey at Hartshorne
Between them, Tony Young and Alisa Harvey hold about a dozen American middle-distance records. But when they take the line Saturday in the elite masters miles at the annual Hartshorne races at Cornell University, they’ll have butterflies. Both are among the oldest in their races, and the newbies will be hot on their tails, including Nick Berra of Pennsylvania and Aeron Arlin Genet of California. This is shaping up as the best series of races in the event’s 43-year history. And it could have been even better! Monica Joyce had to bow out because of work and Jim Sorensen “has been on antibiotics the last week and unfortunately the treatment did not succeed in making him feel race worthy,” reports Tom Hartshorne from Ithaca, New York. “Nonetheless, the fields are still the strongest ever and very competitive in all four elite races.” And Peter Taylor, our all-star announcer, will be back to call the miles.
From left, elites Aeron Arlin Genet, Alisa Harvey, Nick Berra and Tony Young.
The entry form for elite women said: “The overall winner of the elite masters mile will be awarded $300, with $150 and $50 for second and third places, respectively. A $400 bonus will be awarded to the winner who also finishes under 5:06, and another $200 for establishing a new Barton Hall Masters record (the current record is 4:51.32, set by Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA in 2007). We will again have medals (created by Kevin McMahon of Vermont) for 1st through 3rd finishers.”
But my bet for star of the show?
I’m thinking Nolan Shaheed, who turned 60 last July, might be poised to take a sizable chunk out of the listed world indoor record of 5:01.76 by American Dan Conway in 1999.

Good luck to everyone! Hope you have an awesome race Tony!
Horace Grant were are you?
What a great event. Hopefully someone will video tape it and make it available on You Tube. With Pete’s commentary, it should be informative and exciting to watch.

Yes, Ken Effler, it is indeed a great event. I will be leaving my fitness club this morning (Fairfax, Virginia) at 10:15 and hope to be in Ithaca at 4:20 this afternoon. A trip of 6 hours and 5 minutes will be a pleasure, and I am expecting things to go well in the big races tomorrow.
Others will have traveled far greater distances than I, but that is part of what gives the Hartshorne Mile its luster. This is now international (Canada, the US, and the United Kingdom this year), and we have Tom Hartshorne, Rick Hoebeke, and their associates to thank for that. I predict that two records will be set but will not divulge my predictions.
Safe travel Pete. Looking forward to seeing the results later tonight when I arrive back in the USA. The event reminds me of the Wanamaker mile at the Milrose Games. During the late 60’s and the 70’s I never missed that event, which was the highlight of the meet. This years Hartshorne looks to be a great one with all the familiar faces, and several new challengers.
To Lisa, Christine and Nolan from SoCal Track Club: I wish you all the best of luck and to kick tail. I’ll see you all in Boston in 2 months.
Thanks, Ken. It took me exactly 6 hrs and 30 minutes from Fairfax to my hotel in Ithaca. I am sure you would love to be here — the women’s 40+ race will be absolutely outstanding, with Alisa Harvey, Aeron Arlin-Genet, and Lisa Valle heading the field. Wow. Can’t get any better than that, and they don’t charge admission.
Weather here is good, and the masters look like they are full of run. Will head over to Barton Hall tomorrow for the big event (Tom Hartshorne will drive us — there is no better host).
I’ve run many Hartshorne miles, and I must say that the fields this year were absolutely incredible–perhaps the best EVER. It was a joy to watch these amazing athletes in action. Let’s have a round of applause for all involved in offering us the opportunity to continue being active in the sport we love! I get fired up for the whole indoor season at Hartshorne!
