M60 Nolan Shaheed is stupendous at Hartshorne: sub-5 WR

Nolan Shaheed

Pasadena’s Nolan Shaheed, injured before Lahti, couldn’t compete at worlds last summer. But he made up for that today. Flying cross country to run at the Hartshorne Memorial Miles at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, he took eighth in the M50-59 race — but shattered the listed indoor world record for M60 with a sensational 4:57.06. (Complete results are here.) The mark will count. The meet was USATF-sanctioned. The old mark was 5:01.76 by American Dan Conway in 1999. The M60 world outdoor record? It’s 4:54.07 by Holland’s Joop Ruter in 1993 — and well within Nolan’s reach. In fact, Nolan’s indoor mark now beats the listed American outdoor record of 4:58.2 by James Sutton in 1991! On the current Age-Graded Tables, Nolan’s 4:57 is worth an open time of 3:58.9.

Nick Berra, 40, won the elite M40 race in 4:24.74 as Tony Young, who turns 48 in three months, took fifth in 4:33.75. Aeron Arlin-Genet, 42, of central coast California won the W40 elite mile in 5:03.62 as 44-year-old Alisa Harvey of Virginia took third in 5:09.67.

The elite M50 race went to Anselm LeBourne, who clocked 4:35.27, and the women’s elite W50 race went to Cheryl Bellaire, 51, in 5:45.20.

Tom Hartshorne, son of the event’s namesake, stayed up late to ship the results and also wrote:

Francois Martel of Terrebonne Canada broke the Canadian M55 record of 5:01 with his time of 4:56.50. David Cannon, 53,  of Seattle, WA, ran a spectacular time of 4:38.64 to win our age-graded prize with a 93.59% performance. Maureen de St. Croix, 56, of Vancouver, BC won the women’s age-graded contest with a 5:54.68 for a 91.25% performance.

And Nolan did it without being 100% physically. In the first two laps I thought he looked a little flat, but at four laps his chances seemed good. With one lap to go there was no doubt in my mind he would break the mark.
Nick Berra won by 8/100 of a second over Tracy Lokken in a spectacular finish (M40+). Cheryl Bellaire made up a huge deficit in the final lap to beat Julie Hayden in W50+.

    Larry Barnum writes:
Ya know the guy that first broke Dan Conway’s M60 indoor mile World record is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. Unassuming, generous, supportive and a good sport. You’d never know that he’s won a few world titles at 800 and 1500. A true champion as a man and a runner. Of course, I’m talkin’ about Kevin Solomon of Australia, who ran 5:01.62 at a little known USATF indoor meet in Boston on 2008, but that never got listed on the WMA website. But I could also be talking about this new guy too, No-slowing Shaheed. Welcome back. But sixty? Nobody’s that old. How’d that happen? Good luck Nolan. Get those records this year and get ’em approved.

Aeron Arlin-Genet, winner of the W40 elite race, posted this on her Facebook page:
Won the gold at the Hartshorne Master Mile! Took it out at the gun and never looked back. Unfortunately no one went w/ me. Hoped for a faster time/more competition, but that will come w/ more wins. I’m very barn sour — can’t wait to get home. Will get the race video uploaded once we get home. Thanks for all the warm wishes! Love the support!

The geography of the entrants was amazing for this event — United Kingdom and Canada represented as well as, among the states, Idaho, Washington, California, New Mexico, and 10 others. Even the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was represented (by Tracy Lokken). Tracy initially told me he had come down by sled for his first travel leg but then changed that to a plane out of the very modestly sized Marquette (Michigan).
Larry Barnum brings up an interesting point, and one that could have been embarrassing. Nolan Shaheed actually beat Kevin Solomon’s world mark for M60, not Dan Conway’s slightly slower listed mark. I had forgotten about Kevin Solomon’s record, even though I was the announcer that day at our indoor nationals (2008). In fact, I believe it was Larry who prompted me that day on Kevin. It’s a shame that Kevin’s mark was not accepted (I don’t know why it was denied).
For the current meet I had been more concerned about the possibility that Tony Young would break Al Swenson’s listed M45 WORLD mark (4:21.90) but would not break the listed AMERICAN mark of 4:20.18 by John Hinton. It would be very logical for Tony to run somewhere in between those two times. Unfortunately, he was at only “75%” by his own estimate and tired badly in the late stages. At 100% he could definitely have run 4:21.00 and set off a lot of discussion by breaking the world mark but failing to reach the American.
Tom Hartshorne is still the best host ever (in masters T&F).

    Nolan,
Love the way you represent masters track and field and “our” hometown, Pasadena. You are gift to the sport and blessing to those you touch.
