Top prize for Arizona masters 800 event rises to $650
A month ago, we noted the second Annual SISU Foundation 800 Meter Challenge Race on March 8, with a first-place prize of $500. Check that. The top prize is now $650, reports event organizer Doug Thompson. He writes: “We’ve gotten agreement from Saucony to donate six pairs of shoes to men and women who beat the All-American standard in the race. We’ve received an anonymous donation of another $150, bringing our total first-prize money to $650 for the man or woman who runs the most seconds under their All-American standard. We’ve received numerous inquiries and several commitments to participate. . . . I’m getting excited about this because other folks are getting excited.â€
Doug also writes:
One sub-2:00 masters runner has committed and another is tentative at this time, plus several others who should at least beat the All-American standard; this will be a faster race than last year. This weekend I will be sending out an email notice to my entire list and anyone else who’s expressed interest, asking to hear their intentions within the next week.
They do need to register for the Grand Canyon State Games, as explained on our race web page. Speaking of our race page, sisu800.com, we’ve added links to pictures from last year’s race, including a very attractive one of me leading at the 400 (unfortunately I couldn’t hold on and was passed by, among others, Rich Burns).

Now this is a great idea! Good luck to the competitors, I wish you all the best.
Tony, I bet you could run a good 800…..Sully
LOL Sully who are you? I would run a 800 at this meet, I gonna talk to my coach.
Tony, Sully, Mike Sullivan …I do a little sprinting also….no hurdles yet…May run in the Grand Canyon Games on March 8th but I don’t think my mind would let me run an 800 ..have not run one in 30 years….By the way who ran on that Southwest Team that ran 3:37 at the Millrose Games?
LOL You do some sprinting my a$$! Nice to meet you Mike , I know of you and I have a lot of respect for what you have accomplished in track & field. Well it was David Jones to Robert Thomas to me and Khalid closed for us. We pretty much won as soon as David handed off but the field is different ages and its a hard rack to run on, I don’t like it too small for me.
Tony, Awesome team, had the pleasure of watching Mr. Thomas run last year Indoors in Boston ..amazing —See your no slouch yourself…Great job guys.. keep it up….I Agree the boards are tough to run – especially for the big runners.
I hate indoors I feel depressed in these buildings, I love running outdoors in the sun doesn’t mater to me how hot it is. Hey heres my e mail address (tonygon6@mac.com) feel free to contact me here. Yeah our team is very good and they are a dedicated good group of athletes, I like them all and of course we are all nuts as sprinters usually are… except me.
Hey Tony, If I can scrounge up $40 I’ll join you guys (Southwest Sprinters) again if needed…I want no part of that 4×400 action nor anything to do with indoor track and field
